Rafael Nadal Expresses Optimism After Alexandra Eala’s Unexpected Defeat in Eastbourne

Maya Joint secured the WTA title in Eastbourne on Saturday after a historic final against Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The Australian got past Eala with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (12/10) win in a showdown that lasted more than two hours and 25 minutes.

To a massive surprise for the fans, Joint showed great nerve by saving four championship points during the third-set tie-break. While Eala was seen turning emotional during her post-match on-court interview, Rafael Nadal stepped forward to offer support.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion shared a reaction to the video officially posted on Tennis Channel’s X handle, expressing optimism about Eala’s consistent rise.

“The first final of many finals, @AlexEala05!” he wrote.

Alexandra Eala joined the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca when she was just 12. The young champ earned a scholarship after winning the prestigious Les Petits As tournament in France.

She later moved from the Philippines to live and train full‑time at the academy. Eala received athletic and academic support under Nadal’s program, where she eventually graduated in June 2023.

Amid her main draw miracles in 2025, both Nadal and members of his academy emerged as firm supporters of the young champ’s notable rise in rankings.

When Nadal Congratulated Eala on Reaching the Miami Open Semifinal

Eala’s campaign at the Miami Open stunned the tennis community to a great extent. As the 20-year-old defeated top-ranked rivals, including Paula Badosa and Madison Keys, fans turned optimistic about her form.

After she reached the final by securing a commendable straight-set win over Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, Nadal stepped forward to express pride over the Filipina’s massive rise.

“We are extremely proud of you, Alex. What an incredible tournament! Let’s keep dreaming!” he wrote on X.

Eala will now prepare for her debut main draw match at the upcoming major event in Wimbledon. The WTA star is set to compete against former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in her opening round match.
