How Did Rafael Nadal, Ben Shelton and Other Tennis Stars Rally Around Holger Rune?
Rune had discomfort during his quarterfinal clash in Stockholm, but still prevailed. Determined to continue his campaign, he entered the semifinals against Ugo Humbert and took the opening set 6-4. However, while chasing down a wide shot from the Frenchman, Rune landed awkwardly on his left foot, suffering a devastating tendon tear that brought his run to a halt.
The 22-year-old was ultimately forced to leave the court, visibly distraught by the outcome. Thankfully, things have taken a positive turn for the Dane, who promptly underwent successful surgery in Copenhagen. Rune shared a photo from his hospital bed and an encouraging message for his supporters.
“Hi everyone. Surgery went really well today. Thank you for all your incredible messages and support ❤️ I will keep you updated on my recovery. But now rest and heal,” he wrote in his Instagram post.

The severity of Rune’s injury is underscored by the fact that he has been forced to end his 2025 season prematurely. The former world No. 4 played 58 matches this year, winning 36. His sole title came at the Barcelona Open, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6), 6-2 in the final, and he also finished as runner-up at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Rune’s surgery update is a welcome relief for the tennis world, eagerly hoping for his swift recovery. Attention now turns to when the Dane will return to the court.
