Patrick Mouratoglou Rubbishes Jannik Sinner Grand Slam ‘Weakness’ Claim

Patrick Mouratoglou pushed back the narrative questioning Jannik Sinner’s mentality at Grand Slams in comparison to Carlos Alcaraz's.

Jannik Sinner’s recent accomplishments have drawn a lot of attention. After he won the first three Masters 1000 titles of the season, veteran coach Patrick Mouratoglou even compared his mindset with 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal’s by highlighting their “100% commitment” and shared approach.

However, his remarks drew a response from a user who argued that Carlos Alcaraz possesses a stronger mentality than Jannik Sinner at Grand Slams. Mouratoglou, though, was quick to counter with an explanation of his own.

Patrick Mouratoglou Backs Jannik Sinner’s Grand Slam Mentality

Mouratoglou, who’s had the honor of coaching several big names like Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Holger Rune, and Simona Halep, among others, frequently shares his candid opinions online.

A few days ago, the 55-year-old explained that Sinner possesses the rare ability to approach every shot with complete commitment throughout the season, drawing parallels to Nadal’s mindset. However, he added that Sinner’s approach differs from that of his arch-rival Alcaraz, noting that the Spaniard needs to “have fun” on court to bring out his best.

“Why does Sinner win matches with such authority, while Alcaraz sometimes suffers surprising losses? As often, mindset and inner composure are key,” he shared on the clip on Instagram.

The comments section was soon flooded with fans’ opinions, with some in agreement and others pushing back. One fan questioned whether Sinner lacks a strong Grand Slam mentality, pointing out his recent loss to Djokovic in Melbourne. The comment highlighted that Alcaraz defeated the Serb in the final and appears to raise his level significantly on the biggest stages.

“Is Sinner’s mentality when it comes to Grand Slam weak? Because he got beaten by Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, but then Alcaraz came and beaten Djokovic….so I think I understand the point you make, but it becomes pointless as in the Grand Slams to me Alcaraz often finds another level recently,” they wrote.

However, Mouratoglou argued it’s unfair to question Sinner’s mentality when he has already won multiple Grand Slam titles. He said, “It’s hard to call anyone’s mentality weak at Grand Slam level when they’ve won three of the four and even held three match points to win the fourth. I’ll give a more in-depth answer later, but I had to mention this: Jannik’s Grand Slam achievements are already massive.”

The discourse around Sinner and Alcaraz has become a constant on tour, fueled by their sustained success and high-profile clashes. Their rivalry now stands among the most compelling in the modern era. While Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 10–7, Sinner has recently seized momentum, winning their last two meetings at the ATP Finals and the Monte-Carlo Masters.

What further underlines Sinner’s dominance is completing the Sunshine Double, followed by the Monte-Carlo title. Having also won the Paris Masters last year, he has now clinched four consecutive Masters 1000 trophies. The recent surge also saw him overtake Alcaraz to reclaim the World No. 1 ranking.

In less than three years, since winning his first Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open in August 2023, Jannik Sinner has clinched eight titles at the level. He has also won two ATP Finals, four Grand Slams, and two Davis Cup titles for Italy.
