Jannik Sinner’s playing style has resulted in comparison to Novak Djokovic over the years. His recent form has even prompted a “robot” comment from Joāo Fonseca, who faced him at Indian Wells. Now, Patrick Mouratoglou has weighed in on the Italian’s incredible run and shared which player he reminds him of.
After completing the Sunshine Double without dropping a set, Sinner has made a near-perfect start to the clay-court swing. He is in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he will face rival Carlos Alcaraz.
Patrick Mouratoglou Hails Jannik Sinner’s Commitment Amid Incredible Run
Mouratoglou believes that Sinner has that rare quality of playing every single shot with 100% commitment all year long. This mindset is why Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka’s former coach believes that Sinner is a lot like Rafael Nadal.
“Everybody compares Jannik Sinner with Novak Djokovic for reasons that are quite obvious. The style of play. But nobody compares him with someone I think he should be compared to in terms of mindset. It’s Rafael Nadal,” Mouratoglou said on his latest Instagram explainer video.
“They have something in common that is incredible and so rare. It’s the ability to play every single shot from January 1 to December 31 with 100% commitment, focus, and intensity. It’s so rare, and that explains why he won 10 sets in a row at the ATP Finals, plus 37 sets in a row in Masters 1000… That’s completely crazy,” he added.
Mouratoglou also compared Sinner’s mentality to Alcaraz’s and said the Spaniard needs to “have fun” on the court to succeed.
“And if you compare with Alcaraz, he doesn’t have the same mindset. Sinner, full every single shot. Alcaraz, fun. He has to have fun on the court. When he has fun on the court, he’s unbelievable,” he said.

The decorated coach also mentioned Fonseca’s comments about Sinner and used them to highlight the level at which the Italian has been performing.

“It’s very interesting to have the two players that are at the top of the game that have such a different mindset, completely opposite. Someone 100% serious, someone 100% fun. It’s true that the word “robot” by Fonseca can be seen in a negative way. I don’t think he had any intention to be negative. More trying to describe what Sinner is achieve is completely insane,” he added.
Alcaraz and Sinner will collide in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters on Sunday, and whoever comes out on top will also be the world No. 1 when the rankings are next updated. The Spaniard is the reigning champion at the Masters 1000 tournament and the current top-ranked player in the world, but Sinner has the chance to usurp him on Sunday.
