Social media abuse is something many tennis players and their partners have spoken about over the years, especially from fans who bet on matches and then lose money based on the outcome.
“We have received many comments, some very harsh, from the public. ‘Nico, retire,’ ‘Nico, the only thing you’re good for is your family.’ And I really ask myself: if a mom or dad comes home after having a bad day at work, and their child says to them, ‘Hey, Dad, retire!’ or makes a comment like, ‘How ashamed must your child be of you?'” she said.
Urruticoechea posted a number of screenshots on her Instagram story about some of the threats and abuse she has received over the years, tagging the ATP Tour.

Urruticoechea also spoke about just how difficult the last few months have been for them, with the death threats and Jarry having to deal with vertigo problems.
“I feel that Nico is truly admirable. Right after the Rome incident, he was struck down by vertigo. You simply cannot imagine how grueling that vertigo was. Nico still has to walk into rooms and place all his little notes, marked with dots, around the space so he can look at them and keep trying to recalibrate his vision, because, to this day, what his eyes tell him and what his brain tells him are two completely different things,” she said.
“It has been nothing but a string of bad luck. Yet Nico is doing everything in his power to grow, to learn, and to remain resilient in the midst of what have been some very, very difficult years. That is why seeing him today was so emotional, and at the same time, it was incredibly moving to witness all the positive support,” she said about his ongoing Madrid Challenger run.
In addition, Urruticoechea detailed a frightening incident at the Italian Open, where someone broke into their hotel room. She also spoke about how they alerted the ATP Tour about this issue but weren’t able to get much help.
On the court, Jarry enjoyed an excellent run at the 2024 Italian Open and made it all the way to the final. In the title match, the Chilean was beaten by Alexander Zverev.
