Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for cocaine following a drug test in Mallorca in June. He called it a “huge mistake,” took full responsibility, and said his recent injuries had affected his mental health but stressed that this was not an excuse.
Kyrgios is now stepping away from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on his well-being, and the tennis analysts and fans reacted, pointing out his past criticism of other pros involved in doping controversies.
Tennis World Reacts to Nick Kyrgios’ Failed Drug Test and Provisional Suspension
During the Mallorca Open on June 22, the Australian gave a sample that later tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) provisionally suspended him from August 4.
Kyrgios can appeal the suspension, but the ITIA has stated he has not done so yet. Until a final decision is made, he is banned from playing, coaching at, or attending Grand Slams and other events under the men’s and women’s tours. He could face a ban of up to four years, although it could be reduced to three months if he proves he took the drug outside competition.
Following the ITIA’s announcement, Kyrgios took to Instagram to address the situation publicly. “I’m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors, and everyone close to me,” Kyrgios wrote. “Above all, I’m sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets and I’m deeply disappointed in myself.”
Kyrgios has, on multiple occasions, lectured others on integrity and clean sport. He had also criticized the way two high-profile anti-doping cases involving Jannik Sinner and Iga Świątek were handled.
“I would never in my life try to dope… Everyone should be treated equally. Two number ones being banned for doping is disgusting for our sport; it gives a terrible image,“ Kyrgios said in 2024.
On X, broadcaster Fergus Gavin pointed out this sharp contrast, writing, “Nick Kyrgios is someone who has preached for a clean sport for a long time. Has made nasty remarks to players hitting with those who have failed drugs tests in the past (Cruz Hewitt still only a junior at the time). He has now failed a drugs test himself and been suspended.”

For others, the news felt like a bizarre fitting chapter in Kyrgios’s turbulent journey. Tennis writer Scott Barclay commented, “Even the best movie script writers couldn’t have come up with a more on brand ending for Nick Kyrgios’ career than a ban due to a positive test for cocaine. There’s just so many layers to it, could write a dissertation on it all, honestly.”
Beyond the hypocrisy, tennis journalist Jon Wertheim viewed it as the tragedy of an athlete who never fully realized his generational talent: “The irony is undeniable. Meanwhile, commentator Allen McDuffee pointed to the contradiction in Kyrgios now asking the public for space during his suspension. “Nick Kyrgios asking for people to respect his privacy after he’s been anything but respectful is a wild request.”
The former World No. 13 last played at Wimbledon, where he and partner Alexander Bublik lost in the first round of the men’s doubles.
