When Navratilova Spoke About Being Married to Julia Lemigova
Navratilova came out as bisexual in 1981. Last year, while speaking to People magazine, she opened up about her marriage to Lemigova, a woman, a reality she never imagined would be possible while growing up.
“I’m 58 years old, I got married for the first time – it’s about time, right? Growing up as a gay woman, you just don’t ever think about that, and then I thought, about 10 years ago. You know, I think within 10 years gay marriage will be legal.’ And here we are, 10 years later, making it legal,” Navratilova said.
Navratilova’s wife, Lemigova, also said that she hopes that their public marriage would give hope to couples like them.
“I think that seeing couples like us marry is important. Marriage is a natural progression — and something that just isn’t questioned with heterosexual couples. I really hope that us marrying in such a public way gives hope to families like ours,” Lemigova said.
Navratilova retired from tennis in 2006, finishing her career with 59 Grand Slam titles to her name, which includes 18 singles titles, 31 women’s doubles titles, and 10 mixed doubles titles. She was also ranked World No. 1 in both singles and doubles.
