When Emily Spoke About Growing Up With John McEnroe and Tatum O’Neal
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Emily revealed that after she relocated to Los Angeles, her mother also moved there to be closer to her. She expressed that she has always relied on her mother for support despite O’Neal’s struggles with addiction.
“When I moved to LA, Mum moved here to be near me. Mum’s had her issues but she’s happier and healthier than she’s ever been. We talk all the time. Even when Mum had problems, she was always there for me. I can tell her anything,” Emily said.
Emily mentioned that O’Neal is open about her addiction struggles, a transparency that has strengthened their bond and brought them closer.
“My favorite thing with Mum is to cook at home and sit there and talk and talk. Sometimes she feels more like my big sister than my mum. My mum was open about her problems. At times, I felt parental and protective of her, but it’s something that has brought us closer together,” she continued.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Emily acknowledged that having famous parents like John McEnroe and Tatum O’Neal is daunting, but she hopes to do something to make them proud.
“I love my mum and dad. They might be these famous people to everyone else but they’re just Mum and Dad to me and I wouldn’t change a thing. I hope I can do something to make them proud of me,” John McEnroe’s daughter added.
After his divorce from Tatum O’Neal in 1994, John McEnroe married singer Patty Smyth in 1997, and together they have two daughters, Anna and Ava.
