When John McEnroe’s Daughter Emily Spoke About Her Mother Tatum O’Neal Working on Sobriety
Five years ago, in May 2020, John McEnroe’s ex-wife, Tatum O’Neal, overdosed on prescription drugs. This event led to a massive stroke, resulting in her being placed in a coma for over a month. Since waking up from the coma, the actress has been on a challenging journey of rehabilitation, relearning how to speak and write, and committing to her sobriety.
In 2023, during an interview with People magazine, McEnroe and O’Neal’s daughter Emily McEnroe spoke about her mother’s road to recovery. She described her mother’s rehabilitation as a story of “redemption and survival.” Emily expressed that she hopes that O’Neal’s story will inspire others who are struggling or feeling lost.
“It’s a story of redemption and survival. I hope this can help someone else, someone who’s struggled or someone who has shame or doesn’t know how to move forward. That she has survived against all the odds. That’s what I want to convey: how far she’s come, how far we’ve come. And I think that is healing,” Emily said.
Following his divorce from O’Neal, John McEnroe married Patty Smyth in 1997. Together, they have two daughters, Anna and Ava.
