When Spain secured the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought extra-time victory over Argentina, the post-match headlines were quickly overshadowed by ugly scenes on the pitch. While many have expressed their opinions, in a recent podcast episode, former tennis world No. 1 in doubles and commentator Rennae Stubbs, alongside co-host Caitlin Thompson, ripped into the Argentinian squad’s unsportsmanlike conduct and overall performance.
Rennae Stubbs Blasts Argentina’s World Cup Conduct: “You Guys Should Have Lost 6-0”
On the latest episode of “The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast,” the conversation took a detour from tennis to the dramatic World Cup final. Stubbs brought up the topic by celebrating the Spanish victory, declaring, “Viva and Vamos España!” while saying sorry to their Argentinian listeners for the heartbreaking result.
However, Thompson lacked that sympathy, stating that she was not sorry because their sportsmanship was “despicable,” and boldly claimed that Lionel Messi had “ruined his legacy.” Thompson also suggested that the players should be banned from the world stage for their violent behavior.
Stubbs quickly jumped back in to agree with the founder of Racquet magazine and add her own reality check for the South American side.
“I agree with you, it was despicable. Also, by far, Spain was the better team. I mean, they had 6,000 shots on goal, and Argentina had zero. That is on you as a team. That is on your players, and that is on your coach; that is on you guys.”
And then you’re going to start swinging at the Spanish players after the game? Come on, give me a break. You guys should have lost 6-0,” added Stubbs.
During the match, Argentina’s frustration with Spain’s defensive dominance led to a very physical approach, with the South American side committing 25 fouls. Argentina’s Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 90th minute after receiving a second yellow card for a heavy challenge. Spain eventually won 1-0, with Ferran Torres scoring.
The tension boiled over into violence after the final whistle, with several Argentine figures, especially Leandro Paredes, instigating post-match brawls. The reigning champions’ shameful display is facing a global backlash.
However, the final at MetLife Stadium was unsurprisingly a star-studded event attended by tennis royalty. Carlos Alcaraz presented the championship trophy before kickoff and later celebrated his nation’s thrilling victory. 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who supported Argentina, was there in the stands, along with Serena Williams, Félix Auger-Aliassime, Rafael Jodar, and Francisco Cerundolo.
