Jessica Pegula recently reacted to Ben Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, signing a contract worth over $2 million annually, including bonuses, with Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Rodman plays as a forward for the U.S. National team and the Washington Spirit in the NWSL, and her contract signing comes after a lot of talk regarding the same.
Jessica Pegula Reacts to Ben Shelton’s Girlfriend Trinity Rodman Signing $2 Million Deal With Washington Spirit
Rodman’s contract with the Washington Spirit expired at the end of December 2025. The Spirit attempted to retain her by offering a deal worth over $1 million per year. However, the NWSL blocked that contract, citing a violation of league rules, which left her in limbo and made her a free agent.
Recently, Rodman ended her free agency by signing a record three-year contract with the Washington Spirit, ensuring her stay with the club through 2028. Her new deal is reportedly worth over $2 million annually, making her the highest-paid player in NWSL history.
In a recent episode of “The Player’s Box Podcast,” Pegula discussed Rodman’s historic contract with the Washington Spirit, describing it as “crazy.”
“In other headlines, I don’t know if anybody else saw Trinity Rodman sign for $1 million salary, which was kind of a huge story. I think we kind of touched on it before that they didn’t really want to pay her. Well, I know if they didn’t want to, it’s just not, I guess, been done in women’s soccer. So, that’s kind of crazy,” Pegula said.
The former World No. 3 hyped up Rodman, stating that the soccer star deserved the $2 million contract.
“I think she’s the highest-paid female soccer player. Her salary is 1 million. She’s staying in Washington, DC. She is the highest-paid female soccer player in the world, which is pretty crazy. I guess she got what she thought she was supposed to get paid in the end,” she added.
On the tennis side of things, both Pegula and Shelton are currently in Melbourne competing at the 2026 Australian Open. Pegula, seeded sixth, began her campaign by defeating Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.
The former World No. 3 then triumphed over compatriot McCartney Kessler 6-0, 6-2, and eliminated Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-3, 6-2 in the second and third rounds, respectively. In the fourth round, she overcame ninth seed Madison Keys with a score of 6-3, 6-4, and then secured her place in the semifinals after defeating fourth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-6(1) in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Shelton, seeded eighth at the Melbourne Major, defeated Ugo Humbert 6-3, 7-6(2), 7-6(5), qualifier Dane Sweeny 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, 30th seed Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5), and 12th seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Here, he will face second seed Jannik Sinner.
