The second-ranked American woman, Jessica Pegula, is one of the biggest names on the WTA Tour. She is enjoying one of the best stretches of her career, delivering dominant performances at multiple tournaments in a row. Currently competing at the 2026 Miami Open, the world No. 5 has reached the fourth round at Hard Rock Stadium, a venue the American is familiar with.
Despite her status in women’s tennis, Pegula faced something unusual at this year’s edition, which she pointed out during an interview with Tennis Channel.
Jessica Pegula’s Suite Downgrade at the 2026 Miami Open
Following her dominant win in the third round, Pegula joined Tennis Channel for an interview to talk about her impressive performance. However, the conversation quickly shifted to her billionaire family, especially her father, Terry Pegula, the owner of the Buffalo Bills.
Pegula entered the second leg of the Sunshine Double as the fifth seed, given her ranking on the WTA list. She received a first-round bye and defeated Briton Francesca Jones 6-1, 3-0 following a mid-match retirement. She then defeated Canadian star Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets on Sunday. She will now take on the 34th seed, Jaqueline Cristian, on Monday, March 23.
The interviewer mentioned that the world No. 5 is familiar with the tournament, given that the Bills play at the venue against the Miami Dolphins in the AFC East each year. He then brought up that Pegula is used to a particular suite she didn’t get this year, and she immediately agreed.

She then explained how the tournament prioritizes the top seeds for the bigger suites but revealed a big mishap by the organizers. “I was kinda downgraded this year, actually,” Pegula said. “Last year, my suite had a bathroom, and now I don’t have a bathroom. I’m gonna have to talk to James,” referring to tournament director James Blake.
She joked, “I don’t know what James is trying to do here.” The world No. 5 is one of the biggest stars on the WTA Tour, not only for her high profile but also for her consistent results across multiple tournaments. She was also the runner-up last year at the event, losing 7-5, 6-2 to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Considering her seeding at the tournament, Pegula should ideally get one of the best suites at the venue. If she were still downgraded despite all these reasons, it would raise many questions about the organizers.
Pegula then acknowledged that she knows Hard Rock Stadium better than Highmark Stadium in New York, which has served as the Bills’ home. “We live here for weeks, every single year during the tournament, and we come in the exact same way for the Bills game,” she said.
The American, accompanied by her family at the ongoing event, expressed her happiness to be back at the venue. “So I know how to get up and go to the same level and where the locker rooms are and all this stuff,” she said. “So it’s pretty cool being back. I’m very familiar here.”
The 32-year-old is currently defending 650 ranking points at the tournament following her finalist finish at last year’s edition. She will have to deliver the same or better performance this year to maintain or improve her points.
From the 2025 US Open to the 2026 Miami Open, Pegula has reached at least the quarterfinals of every tournament she has entered. She has also posted a 13-5 record against top-20 players, showing just how much she has improved her game.

The biggest reason for her success is her improved serving, which complements her defensive style, making her a strong contender to lift major titles. She won the 2026 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, defeating Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4 in the final, and is the chair of the new WTA Tour Architecture Council, designed to address issues with the tournament calendar.
According to PFSN’s exclusive interactive simulator, Pegula has an 82% chance of winning her next match and making her ninth consecutive WTA-level quarterfinal. It would be interesting to see whether she can deliver another title run before the hard-court swing ends and the tour shifts to the upcoming clay season.
