Coco Gauff will play her first women’s doubles match of 2025 at the Madrid Open. This news came just days after Jessica Pegula revealed the reasons behind her decision to stop playing doubles with the former World No. 2.
Gauff and Pegula have enjoyed a successful partnership in doubles, winning several titles together and even reaching the World No. 1 in the WTA doubles rankings. Their last appearance as a pair was at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they were beaten in the second round by the Czech pairing of Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova.
Coco Gauff To Play Her First Women’s Doubles Event of 2025 at Madrid Open Alongside Robin Montgomery
Gauff most recently competed at the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she secured a victory against Ella Seidel 6-1, 6-1 before being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Jasmine Paolini with a score of 4-6, 3-6.
Gauff will next compete at the Madrid Open, where she will participate in both the singles and doubles events. For the doubles event, she will team up with compatriot Robin Montgomery, having received a wild card entry into the main draw. Their first-round opponents will be the fourth-seeded pair of Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk.
The decision for Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula to part ways in doubles was explained by the World No.3 in a press conference. She mentioned that both she and Gauff started to play well in singles competition, making it challenging to balance both singles and doubles events effectively.
“Coco and I played so much for a couple years there. We did great. A lot of really amazing results and memories. At the same time, doing well in the singles court, we obviously didn’t want to play as much anymore. The schedule just gets really, really tough,” Pegula said.
Who Will Coco Gauff Face in Her 2025 Madrid Open Opening Match?
Gauff is seeded fourth at the 2025 Madrid Open and she will begin her campaign in the second round after being granted a first-round bye. She will take on the winner of the match between Dayana Yastremska and qualifier Francesca Jones in her opening match.
The 20-year-old has previously faced Yastremska twice on the WTA Tour and emerged victorious in both encounters. Their most recent meeting was in the third round of the 2024 French Open, where the American triumphed with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
On the other hand, Gauff and Francesca Jones have also played against each other twice on the WTA Tour, with the American emerging as the winner on both occasions. Their most recent clash was in the first round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, where the former World No.2 secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The winner of the second-round match between Gauff, Yastremska, or Jones will advance to face either 25th seed Leylah Fernandez or Ann Li in the third round of the Madrid Open.
