What Jessica Pegula Said About Chris Evert’s Praise Following Her Charleston Open Win

Pegula, the top seed, had to come through a demanding draw to reach the final. The American battled past Yulia Putintseva, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Diana Shnaider in three-set contests before setting up a semifinal clash against rising compatriot Iva Jovic.

After an assured hold to start, Jovic surged ahead, breaking early and claiming nine of the first 10 points to race into a 3-0 lead. Pegula, however, steadied herself, getting on the board before reeling off consecutive games to draw level at 3-3. Jovic briefly regained the edge, but Pegula’s composure showed in a tense, multi-deuce hold at 4-4, which proved decisive as she strung together three straight games to seal the opening set 6-4.

The second set unfolded in sharp contrast to the first, with both players holding serve comfortably and offering little on return. Serving to force a tiebreak, Pegula came under pressure, facing three break points. She saved two, but Jovic converted the third to force a decider.

The third set tilted completely in Pegula’s favor after she reeled off four consecutive games to turn the deficit into a 4-2 advantage. After a pair of routine holds, she secured another decisive break in the closing game.

Although Jovic kept fighting, saving two match points, Pegula stayed composed. She took the third to wrap up the win and keep her title defense alive.

The victory sent Pegula into her second consecutive Charleston Open final, drawing widespread praise for her impressive run. Among those impressed was former world No. 1 and 18-time Grand Slam champion Evert, who shared her thoughts on X, remarking that Pegula seems to possess “magical powers.”

“After watching her this week in Charleston, I’m convinced @JPegula has magical powers… wonderful match from Jessie and Iva..👏👏👏💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼,” she said.

When asked about Evert’s remarks in her press conference, Pegula responded modestly, being grateful to the American legend. However, she attributed her Charleston Open heroics to her stamina and mental strength, and joked that luck also played a role.

“Oh, well, that’s very nice of Chrissy to say that. Um, I don’t know! I guess it’s my superpower for this week is my stamina, my mental fortitude. I don’t know what it is. But, that’s a big compliment coming from Chrissy. Yeah, but maybe also like cat with nine lives. I’ve heard that a few times too. I do feel a bit more like that than a superpower, maybe just a bit more lucky,” she said.

Pegula will now look to defend her title against first-time finalist Yulia Starodubtseva. Notably, this will mark their first meeting on tour. While the American is chasing her 11th title, the Ukrainian is bidding for her maiden crown.
