Learn the full story behind the verbal clash between Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend at US Open, including their reactions and comments.

The 2025 US Open delivered unexpected drama when Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend’s second-round match ended with more fireworks at the net than during the actual points. While Townsend’s 7-5, 6-1 victory should have been the story, a heated post-match confrontation turned Court 11 into a battleground of words, accusations, and lingering tension that had fans buzzing long after the final serve.

What Did Taylor Townsend Say About Her Verbal Spat With Jelena Ostapenko at the 2025 US Open?

The drama started the moment both players reached the net for what should have been a routine handshake. Instead, Ostapenko apparently told Townsend that she should have apologized for a shot that hit the net cord but still landed in during a crucial moment. A half-minute exchange followed that had Court 11 booing Ostapenko, while the home crowd rallied behind Townsend.

In her post-match interview, Townsend revealed the full extent of Ostapenko’s comments. The Latvian didn’t just question tennis etiquette — she made it personal.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s competition. People get upset when they lose, and you can’t… Some people say bad things. She told me I have no class. I have no education, and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S. So, I’m looking forward to it. I mean, I beat her in Canada outside of the U.S. I beat her in New York, so let’s see what else she has to say,” Townsend said.

During her post-match press conference, Townsend made it clear that Ostapenko’s outburst didn’t catch her off guard. She described it as typical behavior from the former French Open champion when matches don’t go her way. When reporters asked about any previous history between the two players, Townsend replied negatively.

However, Townsend wasn’t about to let the insults slide without a response. She made her position crystal clear: “I’m just not going to tolerate disrespect. You’re not going to disrespect me in my face.”

Addressing Ostapenko’s demand for an apology, Townsend fired back: “If you expect for someone to apologize and they don’t and you get upset about it, that’s your fault, not mine.”

When Ostapenko took to Instagram to defend her actions, Townsend’s reaction was dismissive. “I think it’s comical. I think that it’s kind of funny, because to then go online and have to justify what you said, you obviously feel some type of way and feel like you have to give an explanation for how you acted.”

The conversation took a more serious turn when reporters asked Townsend about possible racial implications behind Ostapenko’s “no class” and “no education” comments. Townsend handled the sensitive topic with measured thoughtfulness.

“I don’t know. I can’t speak on what her intentions were. I can only speak on how I handled the situation. And how I handled it is someone who’s upset about the outcome that occurred,” she said.

The American refused to let the words affect her personally. “I don’t really take that personally because I know that it’s so far from the truth and so far from anything. And again, if I allow what other people have to say about me affect me in that way, then they win.”

Still, Townsend acknowledged the broader context of such language. “That has been a stigma in our community of being non-educated and all the things when it’s the furthest thing from the truth.”

Despite the controversy, Townsend expressed pride in her handling of the situation, noting that her son “would be proud of the way” she managed the confrontation.

With the drama behind her, Townsend is keeping her focus where it belongs: on her next opponent and advancing deeper into the tournament.

What Was Jelena Ostapenko’s Response to the Controversy?

Not content to let Townsend’s version stand unchallenged, Ostapenko shared her perspective through now-deleted Instagram Stories. Without naming Townsend directly, she painted herself as the defender of tennis tradition and proper court etiquette.

“Today after the match I told my opponent that she was very disrespectful as she had a net ball in a very deciding moment and didn’t say sorry, but her answer was that she doesn’t have to say sorry at all,” the Latvian wrote. “There are some rules in tennis which most of the players follow and it was first time ever that this happened to me on tour. If she plays in her homeland it doesn’t mean that she can behave and do whatever she wants.”

But Ostapenko’s complaints didn’t stop at the net cord incident. She also took issue with Townsend’s pre-match routine, claiming it violated tennis protocol.

“In the beginning of the match all players are supposed to start warm up on the baseline. The opponent came out and straight away started the warm up at then which is very disrespectful and against the rules of a tennis match,” she wrote.

As discussions about potential racial undertones in her comments gained traction, the Latvian issued a firm denial in another deleted Instagram story. “I was NEVER racist in my life and I respect all nations of people in the world, for me it doesn’t matter where you come from.”

Both players have moved past the drama and returned their attention to the tournament. Townsend faces Mirra Andreeva in the third round, while Ostapenko shifts to doubles action alongside Barbora Krejčíková.
