Jannik Sinner’s Coach Darren Cahill Gets Honest on Future With World No.1

Darren Cahill has a simple retirement plan, but World No. 1 Jannik Sinner keeps getting in the way. The veteran co-coach recently revealed that his future for the 2026 season is not entirely up to him, but instead rests in Sinner’s hands. This all comes down to a high-stakes promise made on the grass courts of Wimbledon, linking the coach’s career to the player’s success.

As Sinner prepares for the Nitto ATP Finals, where he is scheduled to play Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev, his coach’s long-term commitment is in jeopardy.

Why Is Darren Cahill’s Future Tied to a Wimbledon Pact?

Darren Cahill, a former professional player who became a world-renowned coach, joined Jannik Sinner’s team in July 2022. Working with co-coach Simone Vagnozzi, he has helped transform the Italian into one of the ATP Tour’s elite players.

Under their guidance, the South Tyrol native has collected an impressive resume, including four Major titles, five Masters titles, and the 2024 ATP Finals trophy. This success continues a long-standing trend for Cahill, who has mentored other legends, including Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and Simona Halep.

In addition to his coaching duties, Cahill also serves as an analyst for ESPN and works with the Adidas Player Development Program. His role with Sinner often focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of the game. That relationship led to a unique agreement: if Sinner won the 2025 Wimbledon Championship, Cahill would postpone his retirement and commit to coaching him through the 2026 season.

Now, keeping his promise, the Australian coach confirmed his intentions. “I am a man of my word, we made a pact at Wimbledon,” Cahill said. “My future is in his hands… if he wants, I will stay.”

Cahill’s deep investment in coaching Sinner stems from the young star’s remarkable discipline and principles. While noting that there are many exciting young players on the tour, he explained what makes Sinner stand out. “Jannik is one of those players… He works incredibly hard, he has great discipline,” Cahill added. “He’s a good kid off the court, his family’s awesome and he’s been well brought up, he’s got his feet firmly planted on the ground, he’s respectful, and he believes.”

This belief is central to their partnership. “He believes that one day the ultimate success will come to him and he knows that you don’t get there without a lot of hard work. He’s prepared to do the hard work,” Cahill continued.

This successful partnership has not gone unnoticed, as both Cahill and Vagnozzi were honored with the Coach of the Year award at the 2023 ATP Awards for their exceptional work with the Italian player.
