Jannik Sinner’s decision to skip the Davis Cup Finals has created divided opinion, with some being critical of the Italian’s decision, while others have defended it. However, Sinner got the backing of his closest rival, Carlos Alcaraz, who defended the Italian’s decision to skip the prestigious event.
Carlos Alcaraz Was Supportive of Jannik Sinner’s Decision To Skip the Davis Cup Finals
Alcaraz spoke freely about Sinner’s decision to withdraw from the Davis Cup Finals, stating that the rigors of the modern tennis schedule made it difficult for any player to play at every event. The Spaniard pointed out that for someone like Sinner, it was a bit more difficult as he reached the latter stages of most of the events this year.
Alcaraz said, “The schedule is very tough and difficult. Even more so in Jannik’s case, since he reaches the final rounds in every tournament.”
Alcaraz went on to point out that Sinner was instrumental in Team Italy’s two victorious campaigns in the last two years. Talking about the Italian’s efforts, Alcaraz stated,” He’s already won the Davis Cup the last two years playing both singles and doubles. I think no one has given more sweat and effort than him for his country.”
Alcaraz stated that he understood the sentiment of the fans and the organizers as the Davis Cup Finals were slated to be held in Bologna, where Sinner would have been the main attraction. However, the Spaniard emphasized that every professional player had to decide for their own betterment, and he understood the Italian’s position.
He said,” It’s true that this is the first year it’s being held in Italy and people wanted to see him at home, but everyone has to make their own decisions and I personally understand it.

Every point that Alcaraz raised holds merit, as Sinner played both singles and doubles matches at the Davis Cup Finals for the last two years, and his presence was the cornerstone in the country’s success at the competition, especially in the respective finals against Australia and the Netherlands in 2023 and 2024.
Alcaraz was also right in pointing out the hectic schedule for Sinner, which was even more so for the Italian as he reached the final of 9 of the 11 events he has played this year, winning five titles. He has reached the final of all four Majors this year, and his current form has been sensational, as he has bagged titles in Vienna and Paris.
Right now, both Alcaraz and Sinner are in Turin for the ATP Finals, where both of them are in contention for the year-end World No. 1 ranking.
