What Did Simone Vagnozzi Say About Jannik Sinner’s Health Ahead of the Carlos Alcaraz US Open Final?

Sinner’s coach Simone Vagnozzi has calmed fears about the Italian star’s fitness. The world No. 1 is ready for Sunday’s US Open final clash against Alcaraz. The defending champion is reportedly “fairly relaxed” ahead of his fourth consecutive Grand Slam final this season, and the third major final of the season against the Spaniard, despite the abdominal injury scare.

In the second set of his semifinal match against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sinner took a medical timeout to check with his physio. Later, during his press conference, he shed light on the situation. “Yeah, I just felt a small twitching when I served there in the second set on 4-3. After the treatment, was feeling much, much better, and at some point, I didn’t feel anything anymore,” Sinner explained. He made it clear that his serve was back to normal and that there’s nothing to worry about.

Speaking to UbiTennis after the semifinal victory, his coach, Vagnozzi, shared positive news about the condition. “Sinner only had a bit of discomfort in his abdomen at one point, but after treatment with the physiotherapist, it went away, so I think it’s nothing serious,” the coach explained.

Vagnozzi described how Sinner handled the situation carefully. “When he returned from the treatment, in the first few games, he wasn’t quite sure how he was feeling and didn’t push too hard,” he noted. The precaution paid off as Sinner found his rhythm again. “Then he started to push, and his serve improved, so I believe he’s fairly relaxed for Sunday,” Vagnozzi added.

The 24-year-old completed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory to reach the US Open final in hopes of defending his title at Flushing Meadows.

How Does Sinner’s Coach View the Path to Another Grand Slam Final?

His coach acknowledged that challenging matches like the semifinal serve an important purpose. “Sometimes matches like these are needed to appreciate the journey even more,” he said. “Let’s not take anything for granted. Reaching another final is truly incredible,” Vagnozzi declared, adding that Sunday is going to be a spectacle.

The coach praised Sinner’s development in recent years, noting that he now plays on his opponent’s weaknesses as well. This contrasts with previous years, where he only played to his strengths. Vagnozzi acknowledged the fast-paced nature of the sport while admitting the need to find solutions to put opponents in difficulty.

The upcoming clash between the world No. 1 and the world No. 2 marks the third major final in 2025, with the major final record in 2025 standing at 1-1, including the historic Roland Garros final. Sinner’s head-to-head record against Alcaraz stands at 5-9, though he won their most recently completed Wimbledon encounter.
