What Has Jack Draper Revealed About His ‘Hunger’ to Compete at the Top?

Draper, who had his big breakthrough at this year’s Indian Wells Masters, spoke to the LTA about competing against the two most dominant players on tour. His assessment of Sinner and Carlo Alcaraz reveals both respect and determination.

Sinner and Alcaraz, Draper stressed, are “the best two players in the world.”

“There are no holes in their game; they are so consistent and powerful,” he said, weighing in on the dominant duo. “Mentally, they are both very experienced now on the big stages, and they are both complete players,” he added.

However, Draper stressed that several players like him are knocking on the door, hungry for their breakthrough moment.

“They are leading the way, but there are players like me who are hungry to go beyond their level and will do anything to get to where they are playing,” said the World No. 5.

He continued, “I’m looking forward to many more matchups with them to come.”

Beyond Draper, several players on the ATP Tour have shown significant promise this year. Two ATP stars, Jakub Mensik, 19, and Ben Shelton, 22, won their first Masters 1000 titles this year.

Meanwhile, Sinner’s compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, who displayed sublime form throughout the European clay court swing, broke into the top 10 for the first time this year. Holger Rune, whom Draper defeated in the final of Indian Wells, has also maintained steady form throughout the year despite faltering on the biggest stages.

How Has Jack Draper Spent His Time Away From Tennis?

The path back to competition hasn’t been straightforward for Draper. An arm injury forced him to step away from the court at a crucial time in the season.

“I found out I had an injury in my arm, which I had been playing with for a little while,” Draper told the LTA. “The doctors and my team advised me that I’d need to take some time out.”

This injury forced him to miss two Masters 1000 tournaments leading into the US Open in Toronto and Cincinnati. However, Draper has been using that time to prepare for his comeback to the sport, he revealed.

“I got back to my tennis slowly to protect my arm, but it’s been a really productive few weeks now,” said Draper. “It was disappointing to miss Toronto and Cincinnati, but I think it’s been a good period for me to reflect on things and improve.”

Draper last took to the courts at Wimbledon, where he was defeated by Marin Cilic with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Now, with his recovery complete and his hunger intact, the British star is ready to prove that his semifinal run was just the beginning of his climb toward tennis’s summit.
