American teenager Iva Jović extended her fairytale run at the Australian Open, powering into the quarterfinals with a commanding straight-sets victory over Yulia Putintseva. While the win took the American teenager to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, the Kazakh was seemingly in disbelief, shaking her head after the one-sided contest.
Iva Jović Rejoices While Yulia Putintseva, in Disbelief, Following the Australian Open 4R Clash
Jović has been a commanding presence at the Australian Open, yet to drop a set. The 18-year-old has strengthened her credentials as one of the tour’s rising prospects with convincing wins over Katie Volynets and Priscilla Hon before producing a statement victory over seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the third round.
Her next hurdle was the experienced Putintseva, whose Australian Open campaign had drawn attention for reasons beyond her form. Jović, however, delivered a one-sided display in front of a packed John Cain Arena, imposing herself with relentless precision. Putintseva, meanwhile, struggled for rhythm and made a stream of errors under pressure.
Subsequently, Jović bagled her Kazakh opponent and entered the second set with authority. Putintseva, who had antagonized a vocal section of the crowd by dancing during her previous match, managed just nine points in a punishing first set.
Her frustration spilled over in the second as she repeatedly glanced toward her team, while Jović maintained her stranglehold on the contest. The American closed out a 6-1 second set with authority, as Putintseva finished the match weighed down by 19 unforced errors.
It was a milestone moment for the 18-year-old, who reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. In contrast, Putintseva cut a frustrated figure, shaking her head in disbelief before offering a brief handshake at the net.

Putintseva’s Australian Open run has been stormy, with the Kazakh making headlines both for her tennis and her confrontations with the crowd. She also drew attention after her first-round win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. With Brazilian fans loudly backing Haddad Maia and jeering Putintseva throughout, tensions spilled over at the end, as Putintseva responded by theatrically celebrating and gesturing toward the stands.
Jović, meanwhile, would be focused on replicating a similar performance against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals. The match comes as a novel challenge for both, as they haven’t faced each other on tour yet.
