Tennis World Reacts as Coco Gauff Misses Out on Wimbledon Final

Gauff showed great tenacity to once again come from a set down in her semifinal against Muchová on Thursday. The final set went into a tie-break, where Gauff again came from 4-1 down to take the lead.

However, the two-time Grand Slam champion faltered on match point, sending what should have been a routine forehand into the net with an awkward dropshot. Muchová seized the opportunity, rallying to complete a remarkable comeback and claim a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10) victory.

The match drew a wide range of reactions from the tennis world, with many believing that failure to reach the Wimbledon final would sting Gauff for some time.

Tennis journalist James Gray claimed that the near-miss in the semifinal could “haunt” Gauff for a while.

“Coco Gauff has plenty of career ahead of her. But if she never wins Wimbledon, this failure to put away match point will surely haunt her forever,” he wrote on X.

Sports enthusiast Brett Douglas posted a video of the point and mentioned that Gauff will be ruing the missed forehand at 8-9 that could have sealed her place in the Wimbledon final.

“This miss will haunt Coco Gauff for awhile,” he wrote.

Another user claimed that even they would not be able to forget about that costly miss for some time.

“I’m not even Coco [fan], but I’ll think about this for a while,” they wrote.

Another tennis fan shared their agony over Gauff’s failure to convert the match point.

“This hurt every cell in my body,” they wrote.

“Such a thin margin between victory and defeat,” another reporter said.

“She flat out choked. Hopefully it pushes her to new heights,” one fan wrote.

While Gauff will be ruing her failure to make the most of her opportunity, the spot in the final is a well-deserved reward for Muchová. The 29-year-old is through to her second Grand Slam final after a runner-up finish at the 2023 French Open.

Muchová goes into her first-ever Wimbledon final on a ten-match winning streak, having won the Bad Homburg Open, and will be eager to cap it off by lifting her maiden Grand Slam title. A clash against Linda Nosková or Marta Kostyuk awaits her in the women’s singles final on Saturday.
