Emma Raducanu Announces Surprise Return of Former Coach Ahead of Wimbledon, Months After Split

WTA star Emma Raducanu made a surprising announcement amid the grass swing in preparation for the 2025 Wimbledon championships.

British tennis hope Emma Raducanu has made a key announcement about her coaching staff heading into the grass season. The former US Open champion clawed her way back into the top 40 of the rankings after injuries derailed her momentum in 2022 and 2023.

In 2022, Raducanu struggled with a recurring wrist problem that ultimately cut short her season, and the following year saw her undergo surgery on both wrists and her left ankle. The 22-year-old has put up a series of impressive performances this year. At the recently concluded French Open, she was stopped by the four-time French Open winner and defending champion, Iga Swiatek.

Who Will Coach Emma Raducanu for the Upcoming Wimbledon Championships?

After a successful stint on the European clay, Raducanu has turned her attention toward her home slam – Wimbledon. Raducanu’s hard-hitting game is well-suited for the faster grass courts, and she has made the fourth round at Wimbledon twice: in 2021 and 2024.

Raducanu will next take to the courts at the HSBC Championships at the prestigious Queen’s Club in London, where she will lock horns with Cristina Bucsa of Spain. Addressing the press ahead of her tournament, Raducanu addressed speculations regarding who will coach her for Wimbledon.

Raducanu’s former coach Nick Cavaday and tennis pro-turned-pundit Mark Petchey will team up to train her during the grass season, the tennis star has revealed.

“I am happy to see him (Nick) healthy, first of all. It’s been a long time since we were last on court together in Australia. Obviously, Mark is in Paris commenting, so Nick was around, and it was nice to have a few days with him. They will both be helping me throughout the grass (season),” Raducanu said.

“They (Mark Petchy and Nick Cavaday) can complement each other really well, and I trust both of them a lot,” she added.

Nick Cavaday, 38, who has been associated with Raducanu since her childhood, joined her team ahead of the 2024 season as the British star mounted a comeback to the tour following injuries.

Why Nick Cavaday Had Stepped Away From Coaching Raducanu

The two parted ways in January 2025, as Cavaday decided to step away from coaching, citing health issues.

Mark Petchey, a former British tennis star, previously worked with Raducanu at the Miami Open, where she reached the quarter-finals. Following the successful trial, Raducanu has decided to seek his expertise on an ad-hoc basis.

“For now, there is no real thing set in stone, but we’re taking it week to week and he’s helping me as much as he can alongside his current commitments,” Raducanu said of the coaching arrangement in April.

“He’s helped me in a lot of areas of my game and also off the court, finding things to stimulate me mentally and constantly challenging me, which I like.”
