Elena Rybakina’s commanding run at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells has placed her on the brink of a new career milestone, with the Kazakhstani star set to rise to World No. 2 in the WTA rankings.
Riding the momentum of her Australian Open triumph earlier this season, Rybakina delivered another statement performance in Indian Wells, stringing together a series of authoritative victories to reach the semifinals. Her quarterfinal win over Jessica Pegula not only secured a spot in the final four but also ensured that she will achieve a new career-high ranking when the updated standings are released next Monday.
A Closer Look at Elena Rybakina’s Path to the 2026 BNP Paribas Open Semifinals
Since capturing her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2022, the 26-year-old has steadily expanded her résumé with consistent deep runs at major tournaments. Entering the BNP Paribas Open as the third seed and the reigning Australian Open champion, Rybakina arrived in California as one of the most in-form players on tour.
After receiving a first-round bye, she began her campaign with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2 victory over American Hailey Baptiste. She followed that effort with a straight-sets win against Marta Kostyuk to move into the fourth round. Her progress accelerated when Britain’s Sonay Kartal was forced to retire while trailing 4-6, 3-4.
The quarterfinals presented a much-anticipated rematch with World No. 5 Pegula, who had faced Rybakina in the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this year. Rybakina quickly asserted control, racing through the opening set 6-1 with powerful serving and baseline pressure. Pegula responded in the second set and pushed the match to a tiebreak, but Rybakina maintained her composure and closed out the match 6-1, 7-6(4).
What Does This Ranking Surge Mean for Rybakina’s Career?
The victory guaranteed her a semifinal meeting with ninth seed Elina Svitolina and also secured a new rankings leap. Following Iga Świątek’s quarterfinal defeat to Svitolina, Rybakina is projected to move to No. 2 with 7,523 ranking points, ahead of Świątek’s 7,413. The top position remains held by Aryna Sabalenka, who leads the rankings with 10,415 points.
The move will surpass Rybakina’s previous career-best ranking of No. 3, which she first achieved in June 2023. It also comes during a remarkable 2026 campaign that has already included her Australian Open title and the milestone of 400 career match victories.
Looking ahead, Rybakina is scheduled to take on Svitolina in their seventh WTA Tour meeting, with the pair currently tied in their head-to-head record. The winner of this match will take on either top seed Aryna Sabalenka or 14th seed Linda Nosková in the final.
