Daniil Medvedev has seamlessly carried his China Open momentum into Shanghai, storming into the fourth round where he’ll face rising American talent Learner Tien. The 16th seed has been in commanding form, clinching all his wins in straight sets and most recently dispatching 18th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 7-6(5) to book his spot in the last 16.
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old has endured a testing campaign in Shanghai, with two of his matches stretching to three sets. The American battled past Miomir Kecmanović 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, before dispatching 30th seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets to earn a fourth-round meeting with Medvedev.

Medvedev vs. Tien Head-to-Head
Both players have hit top form, and their meeting is expected to be fierce. Interestingly, the fourth-round clash in Shanghai will reprise their China Open semifinal clash, where Tien won due to Medvedev’s injury walkover, moving 2-0 ahead in their head-to-head.
Interestingly, their only encounter before the China Open came earlier this year at the Australian Open. The second-round clash turned into an exhausting five-set battle, with both refusing to yield, but it was Tien who ultimately triumphed 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(7).
Medvedev vs. Tien Prediction
As noted, both players are brimming with confidence, and their impressive runs through the Asian swing underline that fact. Medvedev advanced to the quarterfinals in Hangzhou and carried that form into Beijing, where an injury cut his promising campaign short in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Tien has charted a similar path through the Asian swing, reaching the quarterfinals in Hangzhou, finishing runner-up at the ATP 500 in Beijing, and now advancing to the fourth round in Shanghai. All told, their upcoming clash promises to be a fiercely contested one.
Medvedev’s serve could prove a key weapon against the American. He has won 81% of his service games this season, comfortably ahead of Tien’s 75%, and holds the edge in first- and second-serve points won, 75% and 50% compared to Tien’s 68% and 50%.
However, Tien holds a slight edge on hard courts, boasting a 75.64% win rate compared to Medvedev’s 74.52%. Even so, Medvedev’s greater experience gives him the upper hand in their Shanghai fourth-round showdown. Though he narrowly lost both previous meetings, the Russian is poised to leverage his know-how in what comes next.
He first suffered a narrow defeat in a closely contested match that could have gone either way, and then withdrew mid-match in Beijing due to a sudden injury. Now, Medvedev will be determined to cut into Tien’s head-to-head advantage. With his experience in high-stakes matches, combined with superior serving and returning, the Russian enters this contest with an edge.
Pick: Medvedev to win in three sets.
