Taylor Fritz’s impending meeting against home favorite Jack Draper might be the most dangerous opening matchup at Wimbledon 2026. Before the draw was released, the American, seeded sixth, was widely considered one of the favorites to reach the final. However, a difficult opening-round draw against the fellow former World No. 4 has significantly complicated his prospects.
Ahead of the main draw, former World No. 1 Andy Roddick shared his thoughts on the challenging matchup.
Uncertainty Rises Over Taylor Fritz’s Wimbledon Run Amid Jack Draper Threat
Fritz has regularly posted encouraging results during the grass swing, with five titles to his name on the surface. He has also been twice a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and reached the semifinals last year.
Although he did not win a title during this year’s grass-court warm-up events, he reached the finals in both Stuttgart and Halle, losing to compatriots Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, respectively. His consistency made him one of the top five favorites for the title, but a nightmare first-round clash against Draper means his chances of a deep run may hinge on how he fares in his opener.
2003 US Open champion Roddick said on his Served podcast, “This is a quarterfinal masquerading as a first-round match. This draw comes out, and Fritz goes, ‘That sucks because I’m in form and I’m ready.’ You don’t want to see this when you’re in form and ready.”
Draper has spent much of the past 12 months sidelined by multiple injuries, causing his ranking to slip significantly. Ranked No. 160 in the world, he is unseeded at Wimbledon this year, resulting in a difficult opening-round matchup that presents a stern test for both players.
“I’m not saying Draper has the stamina coming off of an injury to go seven matches. We don’t know that. This is a first round, and he’s winning matches this week,” Roddick said, expressing caution.
Draper launched his comeback in Eastbourne earlier this week, reaching the semifinals with straight-set victories against Marcos Giron, Jack Pinnington Jones, and Gabriel Diallo. He fell short against Ugo Humbert on Friday.
After a strong showing in Eastbourne, all eyes will be on Jack Draper at SW19 as the home crowd looks to cheer him into the second round. “This is going to be prime time. This is going to be Center Court, save the drama. And honestly, I’m worried about this first round,” Roddick added. “This is how draws matter.”
The Brit holds a 3-2 advantage in his head-to-head record against Taylor Fritz and won their only grass-court meeting at the 2022 Queen’s Club Championships 6-3, 6-2. However, Andy Roddick believes the edge lies with his compatriot, who has had more time to settle on grass this season. Draper, meanwhile, has not made it past the second round at SW19 so far in his career.
“I’m going to pick Taylor just because we know where he’s at more. We know the fitness levels. We know he’s played two more tournaments. I’m going, man; this is a tough first round. I could also have Fritz in the final.”

Fritz’s 2026 season has also been disrupted by an injury lay-off, which forced him to miss most of the clay-court swing. He will, however, hope to turn things around with a strong showing at Wimbledon.
