Coco Gauff Showered With Love As Barack-Michelle Obama, Matthew McConaughey, and Host of Other Icons Celebrate French Open Champion

Congratulatory messages have started pouring in for Coco Gauff, the American tennis superstar who clinched her second career Grand Slam at the French Open on Saturday. Gauff overcame the stern challenge of World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who was seen as the favourite going into the match.

Despite dropping the hard-fought first set in a tiebreaker, the American dug deep, taking the second and third sets 6-2, 6-4. With the win, Gauff has edged ahead in the head-to-head with the Belarusian, leading 6-5.

Which Big Names Have Congratulated Coco Gauff on Her French Open Victory?

Several noted figures from the tennis world and beyond have lavished praise on Gauff for clinching her second Grand Slam tournament.

Congratulating Gauff “for an amazing championship at the French Open,” former US President Barack Obama noted that she was the first American to have won at Roland-Garros in a decade. “You make us all proud,” Obama wrote in his congratulatory post on Instagram Stories. Serena Williams, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, is the last American to have won on the Parisian clay.

Michelle Obama, former US first lady, who is married to the 74th President, has reacted with joy at Coco’s big win.

Congratulating Coco, the former First Lady wrote, “Your determination, strength, and grace throughout the French Open has inspired us all – and showed us what’s possible.”

“Wolf of Wall Street” actor Matthew McConaughey, who is an avid fan of the sport, took to social media to celebrate his countrywoman’s victory over the Belarusian.

“Coco Gauff takes the French,” the Oscar-winner wrote on X. “Congrats on 2nd major and 1st on clay.” Filmmaker Spike Lee, another Oscar winner who is a tennis buff, was present in person at Court Philippe-Chatrier to support his countrywomen.

Lindsey Vonn, the celebrated American alpine skier, also congratulated Gauff on her win. Moments after Gauff’s spectacular victory, the Olympic champion simply posted the word “COCO” on X, registering her delight at the result.

After her win, Gauff revealed that she had taken a leaf out of 2024 200m Olympic champion Gabby Thomas’ book ahead of her tie over Sabalenka. Thomas is known to write “notes to self” to build confidence and visualize success. Emulating the practice, Gauff revealed on Instagram that she had written on a piece of paper that she would be the French Open champion. Reacting to Coco’s post, Thomas asserted that Gauff “deserves it all.”

Six-time NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler has also congratulated Gauff on her achievement.

What Coco Gauff Said After Her Win Over Aryna Sabalenka

After hoisting the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time, Coco Gauff asserted that she was happy with the fight she put on during the decider.

In her press conference, the American said, “It really came down to the last few points, but overall I’m just really happy with the fight that I managed today. It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done, and that’s all that matters.”

After her victory at the French Open, the American is set to maintain her career-high World No. 2 spot in the PIF WTA Rankings.
