Third seed Coco Gauff will lock horns with seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open. Whoever wins the match, will face either defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or sixth seed Jessica Pegula in the final of the WTA 1000 event. Both players have had contrasting runs so far in the tournament, with Gauff having not dropped a single set while Paolini has been pushed to three sets in two of her three matches.
The American booked her place in the quarterfinals of the tournament with comprehensive wins over Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima (6-1, 6-0) and Zhang Shuai (6-3, 6-2). Here, she thrashed Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-0 to reach the semifinals in Wuhan for the second straight year. Paolini was pushed to three sets by Yue Yuan and tenth seed Clara Tauson but came out on top.
The Italian then produced some spectacular tennis to trounce Iga Świątek 6-1, 6-2 and register her first win over the Pole.

Gauff vs. Paolini Head-to-Head
The two have locked horns five times so far on the WTA Tour, with Paolini leading their head-to-head 3-2. The Italian has won all of their fixtures in the 2025 season, including the most recent of them, which came in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
Gauff vs. Paolini Prediction
Gauff may be the higher-ranked player but Paolini may have the edge entering the match due to her head-to-head record and the fact that she has already beaten the American thrice this year, that too on different surfaces. Additionally, the Italian will also be high on confidence after her convincing win over Świątek.
Gauff has won 69 out of 96 poiints (71.9%) on her first serve so far in Wuhan, having amassed eight aces. Her second-serve issues have persisted, as she has produced 14 of them already, six each in her last two matches. The American is an effective counterpuncher but can also play aggressively, and it will crucial for her to attack from the start if she is to get the better of Paolini.
The Italian has won 91 out of 138 points on her first-serve so far in Wuhan. Paolini’s game has an element of both balance and versatility, and she produced some quality attacking tennis against Świątek.
If the Italian produces a similar kind of performance, there is a very good chance of her defeating Gauff for the fourth time this year and reaching her third WTA 1000 singles final of the 2025 season.
Prediction: Paolini to win in straight sets.
