Coco Gauff continued her high-profile season with another impressive outing at the 2025 Wuhan Open. Fresh off a challenging run in Beijing, the American star arrived in Wuhan with renewed focus and energy. The tennis world watched closely as she began her campaign in China’s vibrant city, eager to make a statement on the hard courts.
How Did Coco Gauff Perform in Her First Match at the Wuhan Open?
Gauff delivered a dominant performance in her second-round match against Japan’s qualifier Moyuka Uchijima at the Wuhan Open. The World No. 3 needed just 52 minutes to clinch a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory. Gauff’s display was comprehensive from start to finish, and the stats highlighted her control over the match.
Gauff landed 85% of her first serves, while firing five aces without even committing a single double fault. She won 55 of the 77 points played, converted five of eight break points, and dropped only six points on her own serve. Uchijima, despite her efforts, could not find a real opening throughout the contest, while Gauff’s aggressive play and sharp serving left little room for Uchijima to mount any resistance.
Behind this strong performance is a support team, including her biomechanics specialist coach Gavin MacMillan, who continues to fine-tune Gauff’s serve. Her Wuhan journey began with a train ride from Beijing, which Gauff shared with her team via social media.
Following her match, she gave fans a glimpse into her post-win mood by uploading an Instagram story where she and her team enjoyed a lighthearted carpool session. In the video, Gauff and her team sang along to Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” even getting the driver to join in, offering a joyful behind-the-scenes look at the camaraderie in her camp.
She wrote, “Post-win carpool karaoke, lol, even the driver was singing with us, hahaha.”

Following the win, Gauff reflected with satisfaction on her performance, mentioning she was pleased with her level and happy to be back competing in Wuhan. “Obviously, today was a good match for me; I played well. Super happy to be back here in Wuhan and moving on to the next round.”
“No expectations, it’s the last tournament for me in Asia, so I’m just going to enjoy my last week here and go back home and get ready for WTA Finals,” she added after the match. “Obviously, today was a good match for me; I played well. Super happy to be back here in Wuhan and moving onto the next round.”
