Casper Ruud vs Stan Wawrinka Preview: Head-to-Head and Prediction for Swiss Indoors 2025

Casper Ruud will face home favorite Stan Wawrinka in the second round of the 2025 Swiss Indoors. Here’s a preview of their clash.

Fourth seed Casper Ruud will look to make a deep run at the Swiss Indoors as he faces home favorite and former major champion Stan Wawrinka in the second round. Ruud has entered the competition in excellent form, having won the title in Stockholm the previous week. He carried that form to Basel, starting his campaign with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over lucky loser Quentin Halys in the first round.

Wawrinka is no longer the force he once was on the tour, with the Swiss player not making it past the second round of any tour-level events this year. He has had some success on the Challenger Tour, reaching a couple of finals. Having received a wildcard at his home event, he turned back the clock with an efficient performance, winning 6-1, 7-6 (3) against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round.

Ruud vs Wawrinka Head-to-Head

Ruud and Wawrinka have played each other once on the tour, with the head-to-head being 1-0 in favor of Wawrinka. The Swiss won against the Norwegian Basel in 2022, 6-4, 6-4.

Ruud vs Wawrinka Prediction

Ruud’s performances on outdoor hard courts have been poor for someone who has played a US Open final. The Norwegian has had six opening-round exits at outdoor hard-court events this year, with one notable performance coming at the Japan Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. However, on indoor hard courts, he has reached two finals this season, winning the title in Stockholm and reaching the final in Dallas.

Wawrinka has not won a tour-level match on hard courts this year, losing in the first round at Rotterdam, Marseille, and Montpellier. On the Challenger Tour, he reached one indoor hard-court final at the Rennes Challenger, losing to Hugo Gaston. The Swiss player has reached five finals on indoor hard courts in his career, winning one title at the 2015 Rotterdam Open.

In his first-round match against Halys, Ruud was dominant on serve, winning 74%of his service points and facing only one break point. The Norwegian was also effective in return games, winning 40 percent of points on his opponent’s serve.

Like Ruud, Wawrinka was strong on serve as well in his first-round match, winning 71 percent of the service points. On return, he found answers as well, breaking his opponent; serve three times in the match. However, the Swiss has not won consecutive matches at Tour-level events this year, making the Norwegian the favorite to win the upcoming match.

Pick: Ruud to win in straight sets
