Juan Carlos Ferrero Reveals the Reason Behind Carlos Alcaraz’s Split

The announcement on December 17 sent shockwaves through the tennis community when both Alcaraz and Ferrero confirmed their separation through social media statements. The partnership, which had defined Alcaraz’s remarkable rise to the top of men’s tennis since 2018, came to an unexpected conclusion ahead of the 2026 season.

In his first interview following the split with Marca, Ferrero provided detailed information about the circumstances that led to their separation. According to Ferrero, the separation stemmed directly from failed negotiations over his 2026 contract.

On Saturday, December 13, he received a new collaboration proposal with a 48-hour deadline to accept or reject the terms. The disagreement centered not only on financial compensation but also on what Ferrero described as non-sporting clauses and matters related to the professional direction of Alcaraz’s career moving forward.

Ferrero elaborated on the nature of their differences in the interview, explaining that while both parties acted in what they believed to be their own best interests, certain fundamental issues prevented them from reaching an accord.

“Carlos’s camp thinks about what’s best for him, and mine thinks about what’s best for me. There were certain issues on which we couldn’t reach an agreement,” Ferrero stated, though he declined to elaborate on the specific points of contention.

He acknowledged that the situation might have been resolved through direct dialogue, saying that if they had sat down to discuss their differences, some issues could have been potentially addressed. However, ultimately, both parties chose to move forward separately.

Despite the abrupt nature of the split, Ferrero made clear that the relationship had remained strong throughout 2025. He noted that when the ATP Tour concluded in Turin in November, both sides fully expected to continue their partnership into the following season, making the sudden turn of events even more unexpected.

Notably, just six days before the separation was announced, both Ferrero and Samuel López, who has now taken over as Alcaraz’s head coach, were jointly named 2025 ATP Coaches of the Year on December 11.

How Did the Tennis Community React to Ferrero’s Words?

Since Ferrero’s interview went public, reactions have poured in from tennis enthusiasts across social media platforms worldwide. Supporters of both the coach and player have voiced their perspectives on the situation, with many pointing to a common theme that emerges repeatedly in their assessments.

One fan wrote, “This is so sad to see 🙁 Basic COMMUNICATION might’ve helped.”

Another fan blamed the communication gap as the main reason behind the split, writing, “It’s so painful to see when adults can’t COMMUNICATE for such important things.”

“This makes me sad,” wrote a fan, expressing their sorrow following the split.

Another fan chimed in, writing, “OK, whoa, sounds like a deeper, beyond tennis disagreement,” pointing towards some other reasons behind the decision.

The split marks a pivotal moment in professional tennis, with the coming months likely to define the next chapter for the world’s top-ranked player under López’s leadership. Ferrero’s openness to future collaboration suggests the door remains open for potential reconciliation.
