Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner Could Set ‘Problematic’ Trend, Warns Patrick McEnroe As He Cites Coco Gauff and WTA Elite

Patrick McEnroe believes that the ongoing dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz may hurt the future of men's tennis.

Former American tennis player and broadcaster Patrick McEnroe believes the overwhelming dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner across the tour and at Grand Slams could pose long-term challenges for men’s tennis. He contrasted it with the women’s field led by Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, which he considers far more competitive overall.

Patrick McEnroe Warns That the Jannik Sinner–Carlos Alcaraz Stronghold May Hurt Men’s Tennis, Citing Coco Gauff and Other WTA Players

There is no denying that Alcaraz and Sinner have firmly seized control of the tour through their consistency and major title hauls. Since 2024, the duo has split every Grand Slam between them. In 2024, Alcaraz captured the French Open and Wimbledon Championships, while Sinner lifted the Australian Open and US Open. The pattern continued in 2025, with Alcaraz triumphing again in Paris and New York, and Sinner prevailing in Melbourne and London.

Moreover, last season alone, the pair amassed a combined 14 tour-level titles, eight for Alcaraz and six for Sinner. Moreover, the Spaniard seamlessly carried that dominance into 2026, already clinching the Australian Open and the Qatar Open.

The dominance of the arch-rivals was recently examined by McEnroe on the latest episode of “Big T Podcast”, where he joined former world No. 4 Brad Gilbert and former No. 18 Alison Riske.

McEnroe feels men’s tennis lacks depth at the top, with only two players consistently dominating the slams. He believes the women’s field, led by Sabalenka, Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula, features multiple contenders.

“Having just two guys, I would like to see three, four or five players. Similar to what’s going on in women’s tennis right now. I think you got Sabalenka at the top. You got Rybakina who I was happy to see her win her second major. I think she is that good of a player. Coco Gauff, she is up and down a little bit. Pegula, with a big win over the weekend. There’s a lot more players than you can make the argument on the women’s side that can win majors more so than on the men’s side,” the former world No. 28 said.

The 59-year-old added that men’s tennis could face issues if only two players dominate, as there aren’t enough challengers to bother them.

“I think that could be a little problematic moving forward in men’s tennis. We don’t have a third or fourth player that at least can join the Sinner-Alcaraz party,” he added.

McEnroe’s comparison gains weight given the depth of the women’s field last year. Four different players captured the Grand Slams. Madison Keys won the Australian Open, Gauff won the French Open, Iga Świątek secured the Wimbledon Championships, and Sabalenka stood tall at the US Open. Building on that trend, Rybakina won the WTA Finals in 2025 and reinforced the depth by claiming the 2026 Australian Open, her second Grand Slam title.
