The 2025 tennis season belonged to two players: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Their performance was so dominant that legends like Jimmy Connors believe they could have challenged Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in their prime. This burgeoning rivalry now defines the sport, signaling the start of a new era following the Big Three.
Could Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz Have Challenged the Big Three?
In 2025, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner met in three of the four Grand Slam finals. Alcaraz took home the French Open and US Open titles, while Sinner claimed the Wimbledon trophy. This followed the Italian’s victory at the Australian Open, defeating Alexander Zverev. Following his recent four-set win in New York, Alcaraz holds a 10-5 lead in their head-to-head matchups. Together, the duo has kicked off the “Sincaraz” era by winning the last eight Grand Slam titles.
Their rivalry is already drawing comparisons to classic matchups like Federer versus Nadal and McEnroe versus Borg, not just for the frequency of their finals appearances but for the sheer quality of tennis they produce. With his recent run, Sinner became the youngest man in the Open Era to reach five consecutive Grand Slam finals, and Alcaraz became the second-youngest player to win six majors.

On his “Advantage Connors” podcast, American tennis legend Jimmy Connors praised Sinner and Alcaraz for their fearless ambition. He noted that, unlike many players who seemed to wait for the previous generation’s legends to retire, these two would have tried to end their dominance directly. “What I like is that the two guys, Sinner and Alcaraz, they know that that is their time. Even if Nadal and Federer and were still around too, they would want to say, ‘Move over, boys.’ I like that,” he said.
Connors continued, highlighting their proactive mindset. “They have raised their game to that level. The other guys out there playing, they didn’t do that. They were waiting around for them to retire or something to happen and say, ‘Oh, it’s my turn now.’ Well, maybe it’s not. But these two guys, they are head and shoulders,” Connors added.
Who Could Challenge Sinner and Alcaraz in 2026?
As the 2025 Grand Slam season concludes, attention is already shifting to the 2026 Australian Open. Multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Todd Woodbridge has identified a few players who could threaten Sinner and Alcaraz’s reign.
During a conversation on “The Tennis” podcast, Woodbridge named Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton as potential challengers. Speaking on Djokovic, Woodbridge said, “Novak challenges them, absolutely. He has just got to keep finding that resilience at his age to get back out on court.”
Turning his attention to Fritz, he commented on the American’s current form. “Taylor Fritz is playing the best tennis of his career. He has had a really solid year. Can he up the ante against these guys in the best of five to be able to do that?”
Woodbridge also feels that Shelton, whose US Open run ended due to a shoulder injury, has the tools to compete with the top two. “You need the players who dynamically bust through these guys. Ben is one of those with the way he serves and hits his forehand. He has to tighten things up off the ground and not give a few free points here and there but he can always serve his way deep into a set, so that’s massively important,” Woodbridge explained.
While Djokovic did not win a Grand Slam in 2025, the 38-year-old remained a consistent force, reaching the Semifinal of the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Fritz made the Wimbledon semifinal and the US Open quarterfinal, and Shelton reached the Australian Open semifinal and the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Beyond those three, Woodbridge also named Joao Fonseca and Alex de Minaur potential future challenges for the Italian-Spanish duo.
