NFL icon Tom Brady recently offered his thoughts on the fierce and rapidly growing rivalry between tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. In the latest edition of his weekly newsletter ‘The 199,’ Brady shared a thoughtful perspective on how great rivalries elevate not just the athletes involved, but the entire sport.
Tom Brady Reflects on the Power of Rivalries in Sports
The seven-time Super Bowl champion, a known tennis enthusiast, has often been spotted courtside at major tennis events. In his view, the Alcaraz–Sinner rivalry is about how true greatness is forged under pressure, match after match.
“It got me thinking about the power and importance of rivalry in the pursuit of greatness and the gift that is high-level competition,” Brady wrote, noting how these moments of elite head-to-head battles often define a generation.
Brady emphasized how special it is to witness athletes who continuously raise each other’s game. “These elite athletes are the best in their respective sports, and they each have a chance to go down as the best to ever do it, thanks in no small part to the way they push each other,” he said.
Alcaraz and Sinner, both still in their early 20s, have met 13 times already, with the Spaniard leading their head-to-head 8-5 as of Wimbledon 2025. Their clashes have spanned all three surfaces, producing unforgettable moments like Alcaraz’s comeback in the 2025 French Open final and Sinner’s redemption in their most recent meeting, a four-set victory at the All England Club to claim his first Wimbledon crown.

Carlos Alcaraz Gets Honest About Jannik Sinner Rivalry
Alcaraz discussed his mindset when facing Sinner, saying the Italian’s consistent success pushes him to train harder and keep improving. In a pre-tournament press conference at the 2025 Australian Open, he admitted he takes a different approach when playing Sinner.
“When I am playing against him, I have a different mindset. I mean, when you’re facing the best player in the world, you have to do something different. Different preparation or different mindset or whatever,” he said.
“So when I am facing him, I just know that I have to play my best if I want to win, and that’s it. If I have a bad day against Jannik, it’s 99% that you are going to lose so that’s what is in my mind every time that I am going to play against him,” the Spaniard added.
Alcaraz also noted that the rivalry has positively impacted his development over the past year.
“And the good thing for me is when I see him winning titles, in the top of the ranking forces me to practice even harder everyday. In the practice I’m just thinking the things I have to improve just to play against him so that thing is great for me, having him and have such a great rivalry so far just to give the best of me everyday,” he added.
