Carlos Alcaraz turned an already historic night for Inter Miami into a crossover spectacle when he stepped onto the Chase Stadium pitch in Fort Lauderdale and handed over the club’s Eastern Conference trophy after a resounding 5-1 win over New York City FC.
The World No. 1 tennis player became part of the celebration that secured Inter Miami’s first MLS Cup Final appearance, offering soccer legend Lionel Messi a moment of sporting unity that immediately went viral on social media.
Carlos Alcaraz Reunites With Lionel Messi During His Off-Season Miami Visit
For Alcaraz, the evening doubled as a rare off-season highlight. The 22-year-old had traveled to South Florida to attend one of Inter Miami’s most important matches, watching from the stands as Messi led the club to its first Eastern Conference crown.
Positioned near the player tunnel before kickoff, Alcaraz shared friendly greetings with Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez. At the same time, an early eye contact exchange with Messi signaled the evening’s significance. More than two years after their first encounter at the Laureus Awards, the two prodigies once again crossed paths. The club also gifted Alcaraz a personalized ‘Carlitos 99’ pink kit.

The match itself delivered the magnitude worthy of the scene. Tadeo Allende exploded for a hat trick, with Alba and Busquets assisting on his first two goals in what could be the final season of their storied careers. Mateo Silvetti added another in the 67th minute, finishing off a sequence that included Messi’s 405th career assist.
Telasco Segovia then capped Inter Miami’s dominance in the 83rd minute with a slick finish off an Alba heel pass before Allende closed the night with his third goal in the 89th. The 5-1 victory earned Inter Miami a place in the MLS Cup Final for the first time, setting up a home showdown with Vancouver, a team that had defeated Miami twice earlier in the season across both legs of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal.
Once the final whistle blew, Alcaraz stepped directly into the spotlight. Invited onto the field for the trophy ceremony, he carried the Eastern Conference silverware to the stage, where he turned it over to the club’s owners before it ultimately reached Messi’s hands. Moments later, Alcaraz and Messi hugged each other warmly, exchanging a few words and posing for photos.

A Look at Alcaraz’s Upcoming Exhibition Fixtures
Alcaraz is also set to headline the 2025 Miami Invitational on Dec. 8 at loanDepot Park, the Miami Marlins’ baseball stadium. The exhibition features two matches: Amanda Anisimova vs. Emma Raducanu in the women’s opener, followed by Alcaraz vs. João Fonseca in the main men’s showdown.
The matches will follow a best-of-three format with a 10-point tiebreaker if a third set is required. Alcaraz enters the event coming off a hamstring issue that kept him out of the Davis Cup Finals, while the 19-year-old Fonseca sees this as a high-profile opportunity to face the World No. 1 in front of a large Miami crowd.
