World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz stressed that he shares a “beautiful relationship” with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, despite their fierce rivalry on the court.
The revelation comes days after Sinner defeated Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon, avenging his heartbreaking loss to the Spaniard in the longest final in Roland-Garros history a few weeks earlier.
Carlos Alcaraz Has Made Honest Admission About His Relationship With Jannik Sinner
Alcaraz, 22, spoke about his relationship with Sinner, 23, during a recent interview with The Financial Times.
“Trash-talking gets a lot of attention,” Alcaraz told FT. “People really like the idea that there is friction between us.”
“That’s what sells,” the Spaniard observed.
Alcaraz continued, “Although tennis is an individual sport, we are with the same players every week, day in and day out … Jannik and I, who have had great battles on the court, see each other a lot off of it. We talk, we train together sometimes. And in the end you forge a good relationship, a beautiful relationship.”
“We want to win and beat each other, but then off court, being good people and getting along is another matter,” he added.
At present, the Spaniard is taking a break from tennis amid a grueling season. He pulled out of the ongoing Masters 1000 event in Toronto, citing “small muscle issues.”

“I will not be able to play in Toronto this year, I have small muscles issues and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next,” the Spaniard wrote in a statement ahead of the tournament.
Apart from Alcaraz, several top stars, including Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam singles title winner Novak Djokovic, have pulled out of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
The Spaniard is expected to return to action at the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, which will commence on Aug. 5.
How Has Carlos Alcaraz Fared in the 2025 Tennis Season?
Alcaraz began his 2025 season at the Australian Open, aiming to become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam. He was stopped in the quarterfinals by Djokovic. In February, he won his first title of the year at the Rotterdam Open.
The Spaniard then reached the quarterfinals in Doha and the semifinals at Indian Wells, where his 16-match win streak at the event was ended by Jack Draper. A second-round loss in Miami to David Goffin followed.
Alcaraz bounced back on clay, winning Monte Carlo for the first time, then reaching the final in Barcelona, where he lost to Holger Rune. He missed Madrid due to injuries but returned to win the Italian Open in Rome, defeating Sinner. With that, he became the third man to win all major clay titles (Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros).
At the French Open, Alcaraz beat Sinner in a dramatic five-set final, coming back from two sets down. He later won at Queen’s Club before losing to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, his first defeat in a major final.
