Iga Świątek recently rediscovered her form at the Canadian Open, winning the WTA 1000 title in Toronto. The Pole was hoping to build on that success by defending her title at the Cincinnati Open, but she fell short against Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. During the hard-fought encounter, Świątek also faced a disruptive shout from the crowd.
Iga Świątek Encounters Disruptive Spectator During Cincinnati Open Semifinal
Entering the Cincinnati Open semifinals, Świątek aimed to add to her 10-match winning streak and continue her momentum ahead of the US Open, where she will be on the hunt for her seventh Grand Slam title.
Świątek and Jessica Pegula were forced to wait out a rain delay before taking the court for their highly anticipated semifinal clash. However, the weather appeared to threaten the contest once again just two games into the match, with the Pole serving at 1-1, 30-15.
After a fault on her first serve, Świątek appeared troubled by the drizzle and approached the chair umpire to ask about stopping play but was told to continue. However, the 25-year-old paused her service motion once more, prompting a spectator to loudly complain about the delay.
“Come on let’s serve! This is ridiculous,” the spectator shouted.
“You get the sense that if she waits any longer, the rain’s gonna come. She’s gonna get a first serve here,” the commentator said.

With Świątek trailing 30-40 in the same service game, the chair umpire did indeed halt play as the drizzle intensified. Once play resumed after a brief interruption, Pegula clinched the opening set. Although Świątek forced a decider, Pegula secured a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory to put an end to the Pole’s title defense and advance to the final of the WTA 1000 event.
In her post-match press conference, Świątek opened up about the challenges posed by the windy conditions during the match, echoing Pegula’s sentiments about the struggle to hold serve.
“Well, I think we were both better returners than servers, but also it was tougher to serve with this wind. I felt like I mishit many balls with my serve, so maybe that was the thing about it. But I think we’re both returning well, so we were putting pressure on each other,” she said.
Iga Świątek will now head to New York for the US Open, where she will join forces with Casper Ruud for the mixed doubles event ahead of her singles campaign.
The duo will face tough competition from the likes of Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz, Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic, and Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the blockbuster event, with a $1 million prize at stake.
