Jannik Sinner successfully avenged his Paris heartbreak by defeating two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday to claim the coveted Wimbledon title. Both players stood on the cusp of tennis history, but it was the Italian who ultimately prevailed.
Their meetings in the finals have become increasingly frequent, with recent showdowns at the Italian Open, Roland Garros, and now Wimbledon. Reflecting on their rivalry after the match, Alcaraz acknowledged that no other player on tour currently matches the standard he and Sinner set.

Alcaraz had already enjoyed a strong grass-court campaign this season and entered Sunday’s Wimbledon final as a favorite to complete a rare three-peat. He encountered some resistance from the Italian in the opening set but edged it 6-4 and appeared to be in control. However, the World No. 1 had his own set of plans. He repeatedly targeted Alcaraz’s forehand with his precise groundstrokes and disrupted his rhythm.
Sinner’s serve also became increasingly effective as the match progressed, helping him clinch the next three sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, and make history as the first Italian to win the prestigious grass-court Major. Alcaraz, meanwhile, was denied a rare Wimbledon three-peat. Notably, he had defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the final of the previous two editions.
The Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry has certainly captivated the tennis world, and the Spaniard believes it’s great for the sport. During his post-match press conference, Alcaraz remarked that it’s rare to see players consistently reaching the level they bring out in each other on tour.
“I am just really happy about having this rivalry with him. I think it’s great for us and it is great for the tennis. Everytime we play against each other, I think our level is really high. I think, we don’t watch a level like this if I’m honest with you. I don’t see any player playing against each other, having the same level that we’re playing when we face each other,” he said.

This triumph came nearly five weeks after Alcaraz denied Sinner his first Major title on clay at last month’s French Open. The Italian stood on the brink of victory with three championship points, but Alcaraz clawed his way back to snatch the title in a grueling five-hour, 29-minute contest.
Alcaraz Believes He and Sinner Are Shaping a Great Rivalry
What makes a tennis rivalry truly exciting is how often the players meet and how close their matches are. We’ve seen this among the Big Three – Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and Navratilova-Evert. Alcaraz and Sinner might still be in the early stages of their careers, but the success they’ve had and the battles they’ve shared have already made their rivalry one of the most exciting in tennis.
Later in the press conference, Alcaraz said his rivalry with Sinner is growing stronger, especially with frequent Grand Slam and Masters finals encounters. It also motivates him to train harder daily, as beating Sinner demands an exceptional level.
“As I said many times, this rivalry is becoming better and better. We’re building a really great rivalry because we’re playing final of a Grand Slam, final of a Masters, it means the best tournament in the world. I am just really grateful for that, because it gives me the opportunity to just give my 100% every practice everyday, just to be better. Thanks to that, because the level that I have to maintain and I have to raise, if I want to beat Jannik Sinner is really high, so I am just really grateful for that,” he said.

Despite the Italian’s recent Wimbledon triumph, Alcaraz holds a respectable 8-5 head-to-head lead. However, that victory has further solidified Sinner’s position at the top of the ATP rankings, and he holds a strong 3,430-point lead over World No. 2 Alcaraz.
