Ahead of her BNP Paribas Open run, Bianca Andreescu has revealed that she is aiming to reinvent herself mentally and competitively after enduring injuries and setbacks. After exiting the ATX Open with a round-of-32 loss to Dalma Gálfi, the World No. 165 is set to enter the WTA 1000 tournament at Indian Wells, California.
Bianca Andreescu Aims To Mirror Andre Agassi’s Iconic Comeback During His Career
Andreescu began her 2026 WTA season at the ATX Open, held at Westwood Country Club, entering as a wildcard. In the round of 32, she faced the former World No. 79 from Hungary and lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in 2 hours and 11 minutes.
In January, the 2019 US Open champion competed on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour, winning titles in Bradenton and Vero Beach. She is now looking to transform herself by adopting Hall of Famer Andre Agassi’s approach. The ATP legend endured a difficult stretch in the mid-to-late 1990s, when his ranking fell to No. 141.
Agassi did not lose hope and returned to the top spot by following a disciplined regimen, achieving major success after overcoming that period. During a recent appearance on a Big T podcast’s special Indian Wells edition, Andreescu revealed that she is reshaping her mental and competitive spirit and wants to move forward with a renewed mindset.
She highlighted that she is moving closer to the approach she wants to adopt.
“I’m trying to, I guess, reclaim that dangerous, fearless Bianca that can really stand a chance against anyone, and I think I’m getting there,” she said (per Tennis.com). “I just feel that, before, I was focusing too much on, you know, trying to go back to 2019, so living in the past. And now…it’s like recreating the new Bianca, what is it? 7.0. Going back to those levels, was a decision obviously that wasn’t easy, right? In a way, I guess I’m going the Agassi route.”

While speaking with Caroline Garcia and Borja Duran last year on their “Tennis Insider Club” podcast, the winner of the 2019 Indian Wells Open and the Canadian Open expressed a similar mindset, reflecting on how she is working on herself and aiming for her future.
“I’ve been working really hard, and I’m just really excited to see what I can do with this new Bianca, let’s say. I say that every time I come back, but it’s true. I’m so different than when I was, even just a month ago. It’s like this continuous evolving process.”
During her run in California, Andreescu is set to face Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round, marking the first meeting of their careers.
