Top 10 Men’s Matches of 2025, Including Carlos, Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Wimbledon 1R

Taylor Fritz and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard played arguably the best first-round fixture of a Grand Slam at this year’s Wimbledon. The American was seeded fifth at the grass-court Major and was the heavy favorite entering the match against the Frenchman, who was ranked 36th in the world at the time. However, the encounter was anything but one-sided.

Both players were impressive on their serve and the first two sets went to tiebreaks, with Mpetshi Perricard taking both of them. Fritz squandered a total of seven set points across both tiebreaks combined.

However, the American produced the first service break of the match during the third set and took it 6-4. He was only two points away from an opening-round exit during the fourth-set tiebreak but fought back to win it and force the match into a decider.

Both players dominated their respective service games during the final set until Fritz broke Mpetshi Perricard to love in the final game to register a 6-7(6), 6-7(8), 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-4 victory to survive a scare. The Frenchman had a notable moment during the match as he produced the fastest ace in Wimbledon history (153 mph) during the very first game.

Both players showed remarkable serving prowess throughout the match, with Fritz producing 29 aces while Mpetshi Perricard served 37. The American eventually went on to reach the Wimbledon semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.

Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien, Australian Open 2R

Learner Tien and Daniil Medvedev have locked horns thrice so far in 2025, and the first of their encounters came in the second round of the Australian Open, lasting a little less than five hours and finishing at 2:54 a.m. Both players won their respective opening-round clashes in five sets, with Medvedev defeating Kasidit Samrej while Tien triumphed over Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

The American, who was ranked below the Top 100 at the time, won the opening set 6-3 before taking the second set via a tiebreak. Tien had a chance of taking the match in straight sets but he squandered a match point in the third set tiebreak and Medvedev went on to win it. The Russian then dominated the fourth set and clinched it 6-1 to force the match into a decider.

Both players exchanged breaks during the final set and eventually a tiebreak ensued. Medvedev grinded hard but Tien eventually got through him to bag a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(7) to reach the third round of the Australian Open, where he beat Corentin Moutet before losing to Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round.

Tommy Paul vs Alexander Bublik, US Open 3R

Tommy Paul and Alexander Bublik played out one of only two third-round matches at the US Open where five sets were played. Paul was seeded nine spots higher than Bublik and had won each of the three prior encounters between the two. The American had a break point in the opening set but the Kazakh won it via a tiebreak. The second set also went to a tiebreak and Paul won it to level the match.

Bublik broke the American’s serve in the eighth game of the third set and then held his serve to take the set. Paul was unable to convert a set point in the fourth set but eventually won it via a tiebreak to force the match into a decider. Bublik’s serving turned out to be a decisive factor, as he won 16 out of 18 points on it.

The Kazakh also won 13 out of 21 points on his return, as he dominated Paul in the final set to seal a 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 and reach the fourth round, where he suffered a straight-set defeat to Sinner. In a match that saw some outrageous points and immaculate play, Bublik served brilliantly and played some splendid tennis to register his very first victory over Paul.

Alcaraz vs Jaume Munar, Queen’s Club Championships 2R

Alcaraz won his second title at the Queen’s Club Championships but he was close to having his journey at the ATP 500 event cut short as early as in the second round, where he faced compatriot Jaume Munar. The top seed did not have the smoothest of starts to the tournament, as he had to beat Adam Walton 6-4, 7-6(4) to reach the second round.

Here, Alcaraz faced Munar, and the former took the opening set thanks to a solitary break of serve during the third game. However, Munar, who showed a lot of resilience during a lot of his matches this year, dug deep and won the second set after saving a couple of match points.

The two Spaniards exchanged a few breaks in the final set and the score was tied at 4-4. Alcaraz eventually broke his compatriot in the final game of the match to eke out a 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5 win and reach the quarterfinals after a tense encounter under hot conditions.

Novak Djokovic vs Lorenzo Musetti, Hellenic Championship Final

The Hellenic Championship final between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti was viewed as a match that would determine the final singles spot at the ATP Finals, for which, the Italian and Félix Auger-Aliassime were competing. The stakes were high and Musetti, who overcame scares against Stan Wawrinka and Sebastian Korda, played accordingly in the opening set, winning it 6-3.

However, Djokovic, put in a fine display in the second set and won it 6-4 to force the match into a decider. Both players played their hearts out during the last set, and the Serb eventually bagged a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win to register his second tournament triiumph of the 2025 season.

However, despite the defeat, Musetti found a place in the ATP Finals in Turin as Djokovic decided to withdraw from the season-ending championships in Turin.

Flavio Cobolli vs Zizou Bergs, Davis Cup

Cobolli had an impressive 2025 season, which was capped off by an impressive Davis Cup performance. The Italian had a lot of hopes pinned on him during the Final 8, where the likes of Sinner and Musetti were absent.

Cobolli’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Filip Misolic helped his nation set up a Davis Cup semifinal against Belgium. Here, he faced Zizou Bergs after Matteo Berrettini gave Italy a 1-0 lead thanks to his 6-3, 6-4 win over Raphaël Collignon. Cobolli won the opening set 6-3 before the Belgian took the second set via a tiebreak to force the fixture into a decider.

The final set lasted for 98 minutes with match points being saved time and again by both players during a highly lengthy tiebreak. Cobolli’s hitting eventually saw him persevere over the resilient Bergs to win a 32-point tiebreak and win 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15) and take Italy to a third successive Davis Cup final. The defining image of the tie came after its conclusion, with Cobolli consoling a tearful Bergs after their thriller.

Alcaraz vs Ben Shelton, French Open 4R

Alcaraz and Shelton have faced once in each of the past three years. Their solitary meeting in 2025 came in the fourth round of the French Open, and it lasted for over three hours. The first set saw Shelton have three set points during the tiebreak, only for Alcaraz to save all of them and win it.

The American did not make things any easier for the Spaniard in the second set, as he came tantalizingly close to breaking him in the opening game. However, Alcaraz’s grit saw him save six break points and he eventually landed the decisive break to take the second set. Shelton’s resolve eventually paid off in the third set and he won it 6-4 to keep his hopes alive.

However, he was unable to stop the current World No. 1 from taking the final set 6-4 and winning 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and reaching the French Open quarterfinals. While Shelton came up short, this match along with Fritz’s Wimbledon semifinal gives American tennis fans hope that the two at some point could make things real difficult for the Spaniard and Sinner.

Shelton vs Karen Khachanov, Canadian Open Final

The title clash at the Canadian Open was perhaps the best Masters 1000 final of the year. Shelton and Khachanov had contrasting semifinal wins, with the former beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets while the latter edged out Alexander Zverev 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4).

Shelton had three set points in the opening set but could not convert any of them and eventually, Khachanov ended up winning it via a tiebreak to take the lead. The American broke the Russian’s serve before saving a few break points to win the second set 6-4 and force the final into a decider.

Both players dominated their service games during the final set, and a tiebreak ensued, which Shelton dominated to bag a 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3) win and clinch the biggest title of his career so far. The 23-year-old produced a brilliant serving performance in the title clash, bagging 16 aces.

Sinner vs Alexander Zverev, Vienna Open Final

Sinner has currently won 31 straight matches on indoor hard courts but the Italian’s Vienna Open final with Alexander Zverev threatened that streak. The Italian entered the match as the heavy favorite to win, having not dropped a single set en route to the title clash. However, Zverev produced some solid tennis to take the first set 6-3 before Sinner looked to be back in his element and clinch the second set by the same score to force the match into a decider.

The Italian faced a few struggles physically but his mentality saw him eventually get the break he so desired in the 11th game. He then held his serve to register a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win and win his second title in Vienna. Sinner was pushed to the brink by Zverev at the ATP 500 event but he dropped only eight games in their next two encounters at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz vs Sinner, French Open Final

The 2020s have produced some impressive tennis matches so far but if there had to be one match from this period that would go down as an all-time classic, that would be the French Open final between Alcaraz and Sinner.

Both players produced some splendid tennis throughout the tournament and ensured that fans would get to see them lock horns in a Grand Slam final for the very first time. Firsts are always special and this match was well and truly special. It didn’t have the signs for being a thriller, as Sinner dominated at the beginning.

The Italian won the first two sets 6-4, 7-6(4) and seemed well on course to win his second Grand Slam title of the year and become the first Italian man to win the French Open since Adriano Panatta in 1976. However, Alcaraz bounced back in the third set to win it and pull a set back. Sinner had three championship points in the fourth set but the Spaniard saved them all and within a few minutes, it was game on.

Alcaraz, who was playing catch up during the match’s first few hours, looked the favorite to win the final set and eventually dominated the tiebreak to seal a 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) and successfully defend his French Open title. The final saw it all, early dominance, resilience paying off, quality tennis, remarkable shot-making, and of course, Alcaraz’s trademark dropshots.

The match went on to become the second-longest Grand Slam final ever, lasting five hours and 29 minutes, with only the 2012 Australian Open title clash lasting longer.
