How Did Ben Shelton Pull Off His Stunning Comeback Against Flavio Cobolli?

Ben Shelton dramatically earned his 100th tour-level win at the National Bank Open on Sunday night. During his showdown against Cobolli, Shelton was down 3-5 in the final set and hadn’t had a single break point since early in the match. But the American turned things around just in time, securing a notable 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1) victory.

This milestone puts Shelton at a 100-69 record in his tour-level career. He is now the eighth player born after 2000 and the ninth American currently active to reach 100 career wins.

Hundreds of fans enjoyed the high-quality action, including Shelton’s girlfriend and renowned American soccer player Trinity Rodman. The 23-year-old shared a video on Instagram in which she can be seen gripping her couch as Shelton battled to stay alive in the match.

Rodman was heard screaming in excitement as her boyfriend landed the final blow to take down Cobolli.

Shelton’s sister Emma also joined the celebration. After the young champion’s impressive comeback, she expressed her excitement by uploading a story on Instagram featuring the winning score, along with a caption that said:

Already looking ahead to face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinal matchup, Shelton also has another career milestone within reach. The American pro has the golden opportunity to reach his first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal, and maybe even lift the trophy.

What Did Shelton Say About His Thrilling Victory Over Cobolli?

After stunning the crowd in Canada with his remarkable comeback in the round of 16 matchup, Shelton didn’t hold back about the challenges he faced. During a post-match interview, the 22-year-old acknowledged the difficulties of the encounter, marking it as one of his toughest battles.

“Really difficult match. I was down and out, being a break down in the third, the way that he was playing. I gave myself a second chance and I did a good job with it, kind of running from there. A really difficult opponent for me, someone who’s gotten me in three sets after I’ve won the first set twice,” he said.

Shelton will now face de Minaur for the first time in his career. The quarterfinal showdown will determine whether the American pro earns a major milestone or if de Minaur advances further in the tournament.
