The 2025 ATP Finals are heating up with an all-American rivalry worth watching: Taylor Fritz vs. Ben Shelton. Both are chasing not only the season-ending title in Turin but also the distinction of finishing as the top-ranked American, a position Shelton has just reclaimed in the latest rankings update.
After four U.S. women competed in the singles draw at the 2025 WTA Finals, the spotlight now shifts to the men in Turin, with Fritz returning as last year’s finalist and Shelton making his much-anticipated debut.
Ben Shelton Replaces Taylor Fritz To Become the Top-Ranked American
Fritz, who was world No. 4, has now slipped to No. 6 after the recent shuffle in rankings that moved Novak Djokovic ahead of him. However, the bigger winner is Shelton, as he rises to a career-best No. 5. This is the second time Shelton has passed Fritz to become the top-ranked American.
The 23-year-old first surpassed Fritz and became the highest-ranked American male in April 2024 when he won the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, jumping to his then career-high of world No. 14. He became the youngest American since Andy Roddick in 2004Â to become America’s top-ranked male player.
Since that breakthrough, Shelton has proven himself to be the real deal. This season, he won his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the National Bank Open in Canada, reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, and made deep runs at other ATP events, including the Indian Wells, Washington, and Cincinnati Open. And now, he is among the top 5 players in the world.
On the other hand, Fritz also had a good season so far. He helped Team World win the Laver Cup, reached the Wimbledon semifinals, and won titles at the Eastbourne Open, the United Cup and the Stuttgart Open.
Fritz and Shelton Competing Together in ATP Finals Is a Rare Sight for the USA
The 2025 ATP Finals is a big moment for American tennis. For the first time in almost 20 years, two American singles players are competing together at the season-ending event. The last time this happened was in 2006, when Andy Roddick and James Blake both qualified for the tournament. That year, Blake reached the final before losing to Roger Federer. Also, Christian Harrison and Evan King are representing the U.S. in doubles.
Now, Fritz and Shelton are repeating history. Winning the year-end title in his debut would be great for Shelton, while Fritz must be remembering his last year’s final loss.
However, Shelton’s ATP Finals debut didn’t go as planned. Despite his powerful serve and some great moments, he lost his opening match to Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The match showcased both his potential and the areas where he still needs improvement.
On the other side, Fritz will begin his Finals campaign against Lorenzo Musetti. A strong start is important for Fritz if he wants to stay in the race for the semifinals and possibly take back the U.S. No. 1 ranking from Shelton before the season ends.
