Ben Shelton displayed commanding form in the second round of the 2026 Australian Open, taking on Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny on John Cain Arena. The World No. 7’s powerful serving and controlled play secured a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory, securing his berth in the tournament’s third round.
However, Shelton’s post-match interview captured the respect and understanding between the two competitors, which won everyone’s hearts in the stadium.
Ben Shelton’s Dominant Victory Over Dane Sweeny
Shelton maintained his outstanding form at Melbourne Park by beating Dane Sweeny in straight sets with a masterclass serving performance. The American hit 19 aces while committing just two double faults throughout the match, showcasing his precision and power. His efficiency on serve was outstanding as he won 38 of his 43 first-serve points and surrendered only 11 points on it across all three sets.
During his on-court post-match interview, Shelton expressed genuine appreciation for his opponent and the crowd’s energy despite his convincing victory. “It is clear why the Aussie crowds love him here, and he’s a fan favorite, and I’m sure he’s gonna be lighting up John Cain for many years to come. This is a court that I’m experienced playing on, I’m experienced playing Aussies here,” Shelton said graciously.
He then acknowledged the nature of the occasion, adding, “I’m sorry about the outcome today, but I love the chance. I love the noise. I love the passion that you guys have for the sport. So thanks!”

Sweeny, the 24-year-old local qualifier, had achieved the greatest victory of his career just two days ago. The World No. 182 had defeated legendary Frenchman Gaël Monfils in an epic first-round battle, securing a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 triumph over the 39-year-old veteran.
Monfils, who concluded his 20-year association with the Australian Open in 2026, proved to be a formidable test, but Sweeny’s determination took him through to the second round.
Shelton Heads to Face Valentin Vacherot in Third Round
Shelton’s serving display was particularly incredible, as he delivered one of the most efficient serving performances of the tournament to date. He did not lose a single service point in the second set, a remarkable feat that underscored his confidence and precision.
The 23-year-old American, who reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2025, improved his career record at Melbourne Park to an impressive 13-3 with this victory, establishing himself as one of the top contenders in this year’s tournament.
Despite the loss, Sweeny showed class and glimpses of the quality that had allowed him to beat Monfils in the opening round, though Shelton’s powerful serving proved impossible to counter. The Australian qualifier’s first Grand Slam main-draw victory came after winning through three consecutive qualifying matches, making his maiden major appearance a stunning achievement.
Shelton now takes on the 30th-seeded Valentin Vacherot, the 2025 Shanghai Masters Champion, in the third round match on Saturday, January 24, with a 61% chances of advancing to the next round, according to PFSN’s exclusive interactive simulator.
