Laura Siegemund is embracing the underdog role as she gears up to face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
After battling her way through a challenging draw to reach her first-ever quarterfinal at the All England Club, Siegemund remains grounded and focused, acknowledging the daunting task that lies ahead.
Laura Siegemund’s Breakthrough Run at the All England Club
The 37-year-old has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon until this year. Her run to the final eight marks just the second time in her career that she’s reached the quarterfinal stage at a Grand Slam, the first being at the 2020 French Open. On her way to this milestone, Siegemund took down a series of strong opponents, including 29th seed Leylah Fernandez, sixth seed Madison Keys, and lucky loser Solana Sierra.
Reflecting on her upcoming showdown with Sabalenka, Siegemund offered a measured perspective during her post-match press conference.
“I haven’t thought much about it yet. Obviously, she’s one of the greatest players that we have and one of the most aggressive also,” she said. “The only good thing about the match is that I have absolutely nothing to lose, but she’s definitely one of the toughest opponents to have on grass.”
Siegemund emphasized that she intends to stay true to her own rhythm regardless of who’s on the other side of the net. “I just kind of do always my thing,” she added.
“So I don’t change my time or behavior on the court depending on who I have on the other side. And then maybe sometimes some people feel like it should be changing because I’m playing against them. But really, I’m just doing my stuff that I feel comfortable with and that works for me, and I try to be within the rules, that’s it.”
Seigemuns is also active in the doubles event with her partner Beatriz Haddad Maia. The 11th-seeded pair will face eighth-seeded Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Sabalenka, for her part, is a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist. The Belarusian powered past Carson Branstine, Marie Bouzková, Emma Raducanu, and Elise Mertens without dropping a set. She holds a 2-0 record over Siegemund in their previous encounters. The winner of this match will face either the 13th seed, Amanda Anisimova, or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semifinals.
