‘Not Done’ – Arthur Fils Sends a Message, Involves Parents in Celebration After Beating Frances Tiafoe To Win Cincinnati Open

Arthur Fils shared his raw emotions after clinching his maiden Masters 1000 trophy by beating Frances Tiafoe at the Cincinnati Open.

Arthur Fils became the first French player in 12 years to lift an ATP Masters 1000 trophy, winning the 2026 Cincinnati Open by beating Frances Tiafoe in the final on Sunday, August 23. The 22-year-old was over the moon after unlocking a new milestone, and shared his special moment first with his parents, who were not in the stands but were cheering him on from afar.

Arthur Fils Beats Frances Tiafoe To Lift the Cincinnati Open Trophy

Fils entered the Masters 1000 event as the 21st seed, with a couple of semifinal appearances in Miami and Madrid earlier this year being his best results at the level. The Frenchman opened his campaign against Yannick Hanfmann in the second round and continued the title pursuit with wins against Jiří Lehečka, Alex de Minaur, Thiago Agustín Tirante, and Flavio Cobolli.

On Sunday, Fils made a strong start against home favorite Tiafoe in the summit clash, taking the opening set 6-3. The 2024 finalist, however, mounted a determined comeback in the second set, allowing Fils just one game. The deciding set proved to be a one-sided affair, as Fils, following a pep talk in the restroom, bageled the American to seal a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 victory in one hour and 28 minutes.

Arthur Fils’ joy knew no bounds as he celebrated his landmark victory with his team in the stands. The 22-year-old then made a couple of special video calls to share the moment with his parents, father Jean-Philippe Fils, and mother, Anne.

During his victory speech, Fils graciously acknowledged Tiafoe’s effort and congratulated him on a successful tournament.

“It’s good to be here, playing a final against you. When I was young, I was watching you a lot on TV. You were one of the guys that made me turn on the TV, so very happy to see you back at that level, and I hope we’re going to have a lot of nice battles.”

Addressing his team and family, Fils stressed that he has much bigger ambitions to pursue. ‘I mean, guys, unbelievable. I have no words. I cannot say (anything) except thank you very much, guys. We made a hell of a job, and it’s not done yet.”

“I’ve been traveling with my dad every week. He’s not here now, (when) I won the trophy, but I just want to say thanks to him as well. Thanks to all my family. They’re back in Europe. Thanks, you guys.”

With the US Open just around the corner, the Frenchman will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the past three Cincinnati champions, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, who all went on to claim the title in New York.

Arthur Fils, who endured a challenging 2025 season marred by a persistent back injury, will rise to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP rankings on Monday. The 22-year-old is also in a strong position to make his ATP Finals debut, currently sitting fifth in the live race.
