There are some quality American players who have a good chance of winning their maiden Grand Slam at the tournament. On that note, let us take a look at five such individuals.

Taylor Fritz

There is barely a player who can cope with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at present and while Fritz has not won a match a single match against the two since 2022, he could stand a chance against them, particularly on his day.

The American had an impressive run at Wimbledon, reaching the semifinals and putting up a tough fight against Alcaraz before losing 4-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-7(6). Fritz reached the quarterfinals of the Citi DC Open and the semifinals of the Canadian Open. While the World No. 4 suffered a disappointing fourth-round exit in Cincinnati, he will enter the US Open with high expectations, particularly after being the runner-up last year.

Fritz takes on fellow American Emilio Nava in the first round and while his potential opponents in the next three rounds include Brandon Nakashima, Jakub Menšík, and Tomáš Macháč, he should be able to book his place into the quarterfinals without too much trouble given his performances over the past couple of months.

Here, the American could face a tough challenge in seventh seed Novak Djokovic. Fritz is yet to beat the Serb but given his current quality along with the Serb’s fitness woes, there is a fair chance of coming out on top. If the 27-year-old reaches the last four, he will most likely face Carlos Alcaraz.

While the Spaniard has been in top form, Fritz will have the crowd on his side and this might play a significant role. Hence, it should not be much of a surprise if the World No. 4 makes it all the way to the final. Here, it could be a rematch of last year’s title clash against Jannik Sinner and this is where he could receive an even tougher test.

However, as mentioned earlier, if Fritz has his best day, then there still might be a ghost of a chance of him coming out on top against the Italian and winning his maiden Grand Slam title.

Ben Shelton

Judging purely by the North American hard-court swing so far, Shelton has been the best American player in the world. After a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, the 22-year-old reached the semifinals of the Citi DC Open before winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Toronto. He then reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati before losing to Alexander Zverev.

Shelton is among the best talents in tennis at present but in previous months, there were moments when he made too many errors. However, he seems to have got that under control for the time being and we can expecct a deep run from him at the US Open.

Shelton’s draw till the fourth round is pretty favorable as his potential opponents include Tallon Griekspoor, Jiří Lehečka, and Casper Ruud, whose season has not been a particularly good one. Hence, he should be able to make it to the quarterfinals and here, he could face a tough test in Carlos Alcaraz.

Shelton has not won any of his three prior encounters against the Spaniard but he did take a set off him at the French Open, and if the American is at his best, he could give Alcaraz a run for his money. If the 22-year-old reaches the semifinals, he will most likely face compatriot Taylor Fritz, who he beat 6-4, 6-3 in Toronto just weeks back.

Shelton’s most likely opponent in the final would be Jannik Sinner if he gets that far. While there have been a few close encounters between the two in the past, the Italian has won both of his matches against the American this year in straight sets. During both fixtures, the first set went to a tiebreak before Sinner dominated the next two.

If Shelton brings on his A-game during the latter stages of the US Open, there is a fair chance of him adding a Grand Slam to his Masters 1000 title.

Jessica Pegula

Last year’s runner-up has won a few titles so far this season but her form has suffered a dip since her victory in Charleston. The American won just six out of 12 matches after winning the WTA 500 event before the Bad Homburg Open. While the 31-year-old won the grass-court event, she won just two matches since then. These include an opening-round exit at Wimbledon.

Pegula will look to improve on her performance at the US Open and there will be a lot of pressure on her in terms of expectations and saving over a 1000 ranking points from last year.

The 31-year-old faces Mayar Sherif in the opening round and her potential opponents in the next few round include Belinda Bencic, Dayana Yastremska, Liudmila Samsonova, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. All four players are formidable, but if Pegula is at her best and most composed, there is a good chance of her making it to the quarterfinals.

Here, the World No. 4 could be up against compatriot Emma Navarro or Mirra Andreeva, although the likes of Victoria Mboko and Barbora Krejčíková should not be written off. If Pegula goes to the semifinals, this is where she will be massively tested, as her potential opponents include Aryna Sabalenka, Jasmine Paolini, and Elena Rybakina.

While the likes of Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova could be waiting for the 31-year-old in the final, she is capable of giving each of them a run for their money on her day.

Amanda Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova came very close to becoming USA’s third successive Grand Slam singles champion this year when she made the Wimbledon final However, the 23-year-old was fatigued during the title clash and lost 0-6, 0-6 to Iga Świątek.

Since then, Anisimova lost in the fourth round of the Canadian Open and the third round of the Cincinnati Open. The World No. 9 will be eager to rediscover her form during the US Open and be at her physical best at the time.

Anisimova takes on Kimberly Birrell in the opening round of the New York Major and an encounter against either a qualifier or Maya Joint awaits if she comes out on top. The 23-year-old should be able to make the fourth round without much trouble and here, she could be up against 12th seed Elina Svitolina, who defeated her comprehensively in Montreal.

If Anisimova makes it to the quarterfinals, she would most likely take on Iga Świątek in what would be a rematch of the Wimbledon final. The 23-year-old will no doubt have a big mountain to climb but a victtory against the Pole would no doubt strengthen her confidence.

Anisimova’s potential semifinal opponents include Coco Gauff and Madison Keys, both of whom are not ones to be written off. The World No. 9 has already experienced a Grand Slam final not long back but if she is at her best, both physically and mentally, then there might be some chance of her going a step further at the US Open than she did at Wimbledon.

Emma Navarro

Navarro’s 2025 season has been a subpar one so far, as barring four tournaments, she has not won more than one match at a competition. The 24-year-old is currently on a two-match winning streak and while expecting her to go all the way at the US Open is far-fetched, she has a good chance of doing well if she can replicate her performances from last year at the New York Major.

Navarro’s draw is not the easiest of them, as her potential opponents further during the tournament include Barbora Krejčíková and Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko. If the World No. 11 reaches the fourth round, she could most likely take on fifth seed Mirra Andreeva. The Russian has won both of the prior encounters between the two and will be heavily favored to come out on top again.

However, if Navarro manages to beat Andreeva, her potential quarterfinal opponents will include Jessica Pegula and Belinda Bencic and in the semifinals, she could also take on one out of Aryna Sabalenka, Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina.

So, given her current form, the 24-year-old sure has her work cut out. However, a bit of calmness, resilience, and crowd support could see her have a memorable run at the US Open.
