Jimmy Connors recently shared his thoughts on Amanda Anisimova finishing as the runner-up at the 2025 US Open. This marked Anisimova’s second Grand Slam runner-up finish of the year and of her career, with her first coming at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where she lost to Iga Świątek with a scoreline of 6-0, 6-0 in the final.
This year, at the US Open, Anisimova defeated Kimberly Birrell (6-3, 6-2), Maya Joint (7-6(2), 6-2), Jaqueline Cristian (6-4, 4-6, 6-2), Beatriz Haddad Maia (6-0, 6-3), Świątek (6-4, 6-3), and Naomi Osaka (6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3) to secure her place in the championship match. She faced defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final and ended up as the runner-up after losing 3-6, 6-7(3).

The former World No. 1 expressed admiration for Anisimova’s ability to bounce back after being “hammered” by Świątek in the Wimbledon final and then defeating the Pole in New York on her way to the finale.
“The story of the tournament. One of the top three, anyway. The way she got hammered in the final of Wimbledon, she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Iga Świątek and to come into this tournament, the next Grand Slam, two months later and not only get to the quarterfinals to play Iga but beat her, get through to the semis, win that match then get into to play the final against Sabalenka, who by the way she beat in the semis of Wimbledon,” Connors said.
Connors reiterated that Anisimova overcoming her tough loss at Wimbledon to reach the US Open final was “one of the best stories of the tournament” for him.
“What an opportunity. I mean, that’s one of the best stories of the tournament for me. The way she threw that hammering out the door and came and got into this tournament, got stuck into this tournament, and played the kind of tennis she did to get to the finals and have a shot at winning. It’s pretty amazing,” he added.
