Analysing Draws of Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Iga Świątek and Others at Indian Wells 2026

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek face highly challenging potential matchups in the 2026 Indian Wells women's draw.

The 2026 BNP Paribas Open draw is out, and all the top players in the world will be competing with each other starting from March 4. Commonly known as the “Fifth Slam” for its prestige and the participation of top players, it is one of the marquee events across both Tours. Let’s take a look at the women’s draw, which will be headlined by top seed Aryna Sabalenka, who will be in action after a month since her runner-up finish at the Australian Open.

Aryna Sabalenka Will Potentially Face Coco Gauff in The Semifinals in The Top Half Of The Women’s Draw At Indian Wells

Sabalenka is the top seed and one of the pre-tournament favorites at Indian Wells. The Belarusian has received a bye in the first round and will likely face Alycia Parks in the second. If the seedings hold, then the top seed will face the likes of Maya Joint in the third round and either Naomi Osaka or Iva Jovic in the fourth round.

The path to the quarterfinals seems easy enough for last year’s runner-up, but it has a tantalising proposition of Sabalenka facing Osaka in a heavyweight fourth-round clash. The two have met only once before, with Osaka winning a close three-set battle at the 2018 US Open.

The possible quarterfinal opponent for Sabalenka would be the sixth-seeded Amanda Anisimova. The two of them played some high-profile matches last year, such as the Wimbledon semifinal and the US Open final. The American still has a slender 6-5 lead in the head-to-head against Sabalenka after 11 meetings.

Fourth-seeded Coco Gauff is also a prominent feature in the top half of the women’s draw at Indian Wells. Gauff’s form has not been the best this season, with a couple of one-sided losses against the likes of Elina Svitolina (Australian Open) and Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Qatar Open).

There is a high possibility that Gauff will begin her Indian Wells campaign with an opening round clash against former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in the second round. Andreescu has been in fine form on the ITF and Challenger Tours this season, and will be keen to make a good impression against Gauff should she win her first-round match against a qualifier.

A third-round clash against Alexandra Eala might be in the offing for Gauff, but the American recently blew away the Filipino player in Dubai, showing the gap in their respective games. Potential fourth-round opponent Linda Nosková could be a tricky matchup for Gauff, but the American has won both of her previous matches against the Czech, including one in Indian Wells in 2023. Potential quarterfinal opponents for Guaff could be either seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini or 11th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova. Gauff has a winning head-to-head record against both players.

The Sabalenka- Gauff semifinal will be a big attraction for the event, but given the current form, it will be a long shot for Gauff to reach there. Her form has been very patchy this season, and she will have to go past quality opposition to reach there. Meanwhile, Sabalenka has a few potentially tricky matchups, especially if she faces Anisimova in the quarterfinals, but the Belarusian will be the red-hot favorite to reach the last four as she looks to bounce back after her loss in Melbourne.

Iga Świątek Has A Tough Draw In The Bottom Half Of The Women’s Draw At Indian Wells

Świątek has a phenomenal record at Indian Wells, winning 22 of her 25 matches and winning the title twice. However, the Pole’s current form has not been the best, as she has suffered big losses to Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic at the United Cup, followed by losses to Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, respectively.

Świątek received a bye in the first round, after which she will begin her campaign at Indian Wells against either Francesca Jones or a qualifier, neither of whom should be a problem for the Pole. But her third-round opponent will potentially be Maria Sakkari, who just beat her in Qatar last month. They both have won four matches apiece in their 8-match head-to-head series, but Świątek won both their meetings at Indian Wells, including a final in 2022.

The Pole will potentially face either 24th-seeded Zheng Qinwen or the 13th-seeded Karolína Muchová in the fourth round. The Chinese player is returning after a long injury layoff, so the Czech has a higher chance of reaching the fourth round, which will be a tough matchup for Świątek, who just won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Qatar and is in fine form. The possible quarterfinal opponent for the second seed will be either the defending champion Mirra Andreeva or the in-form Elina Svitolina, who is coming off a runner-up finish at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai.

Świątek has lost two of her three matches against Andreeva, including the semifinal at Indian Wells last year, whereas she has won four of her five matches against Svitolina. Given the current form of those two players, Svitolina might be the likely candidate to come through and face the Pole in the quarterfinals. She will face either Jessica Pegula or Elena Rybakina in the semifinals, both of whom have proved to be tough opponents for the Pole in the recent past.

The bottom half of the draw seems loaded with great players, making the path for someone like Świątek extremely difficult. Sabalenka is coming back after a month of rest and will be raring to go, and her section of the draw is relatively easier, making her the favorite to reach at least the semifinal, if not go all the way.
