Sabalenka is back in the California desert preparing for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, a tournament that has shaped much of her hard-court narrative over the past decade. Since her debut in 2018, when she reached the third round, Sabalenka has steadily built her résumé at the event.

In 2019, she advanced to the Round of 16 in singles and captured the doubles title alongside Elise Mertens. The pair defeated Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, marking one of her earliest major triumphs in the desert. Still, the singles trophy has remained out of reach. She missed the 2021 edition and suffered a surprising second-round loss in 2022 as the No. 2 seed during a period when her serve faltered under pressure.

When Did Sabalenka Come Closest to Claiming the Indian Wells Singles Crown?

Her breakthrough moment at Indian Wells came in 2023, when she powered into her first singles final at the event. There, she faced Elena Rybakina and fell in straight sets in a tightly contested contest. In 2024, Sabalenka exited in the fourth round against Emma Navarro.

Last season, despite entering as the top-ranked player and posting commanding victories over McCartney Kessler, Lucia Bronzetti, Sonay Kartal, Liudmila Samsonova, and Madison Keys, she once again finished runner-up. This time, it was a three-set defeat to 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva that denied her the title.

The near misses have only heightened the anticipation surrounding her 2026 campaign. As the top seed this year, Sabalenka received a bye into the second round, where she will take on either local wildcard Alycia Parks or a qualifier.
