‘A Low-Key Suspension’ — NFL Insider Speculates the Truth Behind Mike Vrabel’s Draft Absence Amid Dianna Russini Scandal

Mike Florio believes that Mike Vrabel missing the last day of the draft is actually due to a suspension by the New England Patriots.

Two months ago, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel led his team onto the field in a Super Bowl appearance against the Seattle Seahawks. Although the outcome did not go his way, many believe that Vrabel’s team is still on the ascent. Deep in the middle of the offseason, the Patriots coach finds himself in a delicate situation. An NFL insider believes there is more to the story.

Patriots HC Mike Vrabel Received a Quiet Suspension, Asserts Insider

Vrabel will not attend the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft and will instead be in counseling in order to give the team and his family “the best version” of himself. “Pro Football Talk” host Mike Florio speculated that there is an ulterior reason for Vrabel’s absence.

“The timing of the counseling, and the impact on Vrabel’s availability for a fairly important day on the offseason calendar, invites speculation that it’s potentially a low-key suspension imposed by the Patriots, possibly with a nudge from the league office,” Florio wrote. “A way to punish Vrabel without punishing him — or even acknowledging that there would be any reason to do so.”

On April 7, Page Six published a couple of photos that show Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic at an Arizona resort. One of the photos displayed Vrabel and Russini locking fingers. Both parties are married to other people. While both denied any improprieties, Russini left The Athletic before her contract expired in June. In contrast, the Patriots have not leveled any punishment. Since then, Page Six has released new photos.

While Vrabel did not break any known or documented team rules, Florio questioned the rationale for missing the last day of the draft. Earlier this week, the coach made his first comments since the story broke.

“None of it makes sense on the surface,” Florio added. “Counseling on a Saturday? The Saturday of the draft? There are other days of the week. And the dust will settle on the draft by early next week. It presumably could have waited.”

The story of the alleged tryst overshadowed the Patriots’ possible return to the top tier of the AFC. Quarterback Drake Maye threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, completing 72.0% of his passes.

Similarly, the defense, orchestrated by Vrabel and Zak Kuhr, excelled, ranking 12th in the league with an impact score of 78.2, according to PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric.

The draft begins tonight at 8 p.m. E.T., live from Pittsburgh. Night One features the first 32 selections. Friday brings the second and third rounds into focus. Lastly, Saturday wraps up the seven-round event with the last four rounds.
