The 2025 NFL season has reached Week 14, but the conversation isn’t just about playoff races or MVP candidates. Instead, officiating has retaken center stage, with frustrations boiling over across the league regarding how games are being called.
The latest flashpoint came during Thursday Night Football between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, where controversial flags sparked immediate backlash.
Why Are NFL Refs Facing Backlash After TNF?
Throughout the Week 14 matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, several rulings drew scrutiny, shocking even the broadcast booth. The most contentious moment arrived in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys attempted to mount a comeback.
On a critical play, Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was flagged for offensive pass interference. While there was contact on the play, Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone appeared to grab Ferguson, leading many to believe that if a flag was thrown at all, it should have been against the defense. Instead, the call went against the offense, stalling their momentum.
Former Super Bowl-winning head coach Tony Dungy weighed in on the situation, responding to former quarterback Chase Daniel’s accusations of foul play. While Daniel suggested bias, Dungy pointed to a systemic issue with how rules are interpreted across the league.
“It’s not bias. It’s not favoring one team over another. It’s the fact we don’t have 16 crews who know the definition of pass interference. What is, ‘materially hindering your opponent’s opportunity to catch the ball’? Ten crews would call this DPI, 5 crews would call nothin, and 1 crew would call it OPI. We need consistency. We don’t have it,” exclaimed Dungy.

While Dungy highlighted the lack of consistency and the difficulty in interpreting vague rules, Daniel took a stronger stance. He argued that the officials were actively working against Dallas to benefit Detroit in the pivotal contest.
“The Refs are really trying to keep the Cowboys out of the playoffs … We have a serious officiating problem,” stated Daniel.
The result of this game significantly altered the playoff landscape. With the loss, the Cowboys dropped to 6-6-1, making their path to the postseason much more difficult. Ferguson, who currently ranks 17th among tight ends in PFSN’s Impact Rankings, found himself at the center of a call that likely shouldn’t have happened. While Detroit might have secured the victory regardless, the controversial penalty undeniably hindered Dallas at a crucial moment.
